Forums - Sony Discussion - How Sony Just Patented its Own Downfall

cross-buy and gaikai integration

Never gonna happen. It would be financial suicide for any gaming company if they were to adopt this.

Kind of a silly, sensationalistic article. Either the guy is new to the internet or he's playing this angle up for the hype.

He's asking why Sony would file this patent if Microsoft and Nintendo aren't? Does that even make sense? Is Sony supposed to poke the other two and say, "hey, guys, come file this with me"? You file a patent because you had an idea first and if someone else wants to use it, they've got to pay you. You don't even have to have plans to use it, there are countless unused patents out there.

Did he also write a similar article about Microsoft dooming itself because they filed a patent for a method to count the number of people watching something, possibly for Kinect?

"Consumers are presented with a content selection and a choice of licenses allowing consumption of the content. In one embodiment, a licence manager on the consuming device or on a content providers system manages licence usage and content consumption. The users consuming the content on a display device are monitored so that if the number of user-views licensed is exceeded, remedial action may be taken." http://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/11/this-kinect-patent-is-terrifying-wants-to-charge-you-for-license-violation/

So, really, does anyone think the Xbox 720 is going to use that system? Seriously? Has Microsoft patented its own downfall?

The writer presents this as a "decision" made by Sony when we have no idea if they plan to use it or not. That's why they deserve the criticism going their way.

Not gonna happen unless all the big 3 have a secret meeting in an european castle and decided to do it but since the WiiU is out and it doesn't have anything like that it won't happen.

I still don't think they can get away with this legally.

Used games and trade ins are a fucking rip off anyway.
Gamestop gave me for a 5 days old Halo 4 21€ -.-

I think ppl on the internet are greatly exagerating this used game restriction thing. Ppl saying banning used games is suicide, I say bullshit. Used games adds nothing to the gaming industry when it comes to money. Why bannind something that does'nt give a penny to Sony and many other publishers be commercial suicide?

You guys wanna know how many used games I bought this gen? 2! Bioshock from a friend that wanted to get rid of it, and the second one was'nt even bought by me, it's my brother who got me the first Darksiders on ps3 knowing that I was planning to buy Darksiders2 on wiiU soon. Try finding the first Darksiders new, not an easy task.

I know not everyone is like me, and alot of ppl have alot of used games, but everyone SHOULD be like me imo. When you like a game, support it, support the devs and maybe you will get a sequel. Stop being cheap b*stards, if you can't afford a game, tough luck. Games are not food or shelter, when you can't afford it you either save for it or don't buy it. This gen, we have seen more and more dev and publishers struggle financialy, Sega, THQ, Nintendo, Sony(not just because of gaming), and many more. I dont understand how ppl don't mind giving their money to Gamestop knowing that these publishers are not getting a penny and knowing that these same publishers that are the one making the games that they love are struggling. I know I'll never give gamestopa single penny by buying a used game unless it is a game that I can't find anywhere new.

At all the cheap ppl on the internet yelling that this will be Sony's downfall, I say keep crying and don't buy a PS4, I'm sure Sony does'nt care to lose cheap ppl like you who does'nt buy games as customers and I'm sure that the money from the ppl who will stay with 100% of them buying new 100% of their games will more than make up for it.That is w/o even mentioning the possibility of extra support they may get from 3rd partys when they realise that they are losing alot of money on other platforms.

They are 2problems into banning used games tho. The first one is that you won't be able to lend or borrow games from friend. Or taking a game with you to play at your friends house. That should be fixed by locking games to account and being able to access to accounts on other consoles.
The 2nd problem is like I said earlier, when their is games that are to old and can't be found anywhere new. That should'nt be a problem cause next gen most (if not all) games should ba available via download.

Oh man, using Kinect to count people would be so big brother and hilarious.  Maybe the Sony thing is getting more traction because it's seen as more plausible, because the Kinect thing sounds too crazy to ever come true.

I agree though, definitely not a great article, but sensationalist titles/articles are what get the hits I'm afraid.  It's kind of a "race to the bottom" so to speak.

...

Sony wouldn't do this unless they know for sure Microsoft will do it as well. I'm sure it will happen eventually though.

A while back I read that Microsoft also thinking of some measure against used games. Don't know what happened to that.
