If they can make a profit on continued FF13 sequels why shouldn't they do them? If anything they're wrong to stop after three.

Because they are ruining a franchise that was once so damn good....

SE used to be my favorite, some might disagree but there fall from grace for me was when ff11 and 12 were made, they were just way to different and then 13 came out which is a laughable pile of shit tbh, even though I put just over 100hrs into it the game just wasn't really enjoyable at all. I will admit ff13-2 was better but thats not saying much when 13 was as crap as it was. Final fantasy 13-3 from that trailer looks to be even worse than the original and if you only have control of 1 character then ill probably make this the first final fantasy i've ever missed.

Watch your mouth when you talk about the best game ever made.

Although it is a movie, I would argue that The Spirits Within is actually a pretty good example of what is wrong with Final Fantasy games ...

While I think there are many quality issues with most Final Fantasy games after (and IMO including) Final Fantasy 7, the core problem is that Square uses the Final Fantasy IP without paying tribute to the Final Fantasy series. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is a good example of this because if you just called the movie "The Spirits Within" no one would know it had anything to do with Final Fantasy; and most of their modern games have the same feeling to them.

Personally, I think if Square was actually handling the Final Fantasy series better you would probably hear more people wanting the "Next" Final Fantasy game than people wanting Final Fantasy 6 or 7 to be remade; people want Final Fantasy, they don't want these Final Fantasy branded generic RPGs.

As pointed out by others on the site, they invested a lot in the Crystal Engine and the assets to develop FFXIII, so why not get as much out of that investment as they can? As long as each individual game is profitable and brings further profitability to the whole sub-franchise, it's a sound investment

The only risk they really run here is long-term damage to the FF brand that will hurt future mainline installments.

Where SE lost the plot was in not ditching FFXIV immediately.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Sure, as long as the XIII series is profitable, SE will and technically should milk a series.

Here's the problem: Square was never in the business of "milking" a series, per se. Only was it when the merger began did we see watered down sequels (X-2, XIII-2) and numbered MMOs (why not just create Final Fantasy Online?!). Square and the Final Fantasy series USED to stand for QUALITY over quantity.

At the same time, which some of you have seem to have forgotten, we were teased with Versus XIII, which was supposed to be the flagship game of the PS3. Also requested by the fans and very popular is the Kingdom Hearts series, which, they've decided to make into DS games. Never mind the millions sold on PS2 that had better gameplay. We've been waiting for years for any hint of KH3 on PS3 or even 360.

SE has sold out and do not make quality games as they used to. That's the problem.

In bold and underlined, that is EXACTLY the problem. SE believes in quantity over quality whereas it used to be the other way around.

Funny, because when I look at the timeline:

1999 VIII
2000 IX
2001 X
2002 XI

and yet

2006 XII
2009 XIII
2012 XIII-2

Three times as slow is "quantity over quality"?
