Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 Rumour: Sony Files Patent For Dynamic Content Switching Between Architecturally Distinct GPUs

Great news if true... Sony is walking in the right path.

APU for SO and others backgrounds stuffs
GPU dedicaded to games

That is in line with the Sony said before... the SO and background stuffs will not interfer in the games... the oposite to PS3 you can run a lot of apps while play a game without performance sacrifices.

Noo my post is gone. Ok a short version of it.

RSX+Cell had combined following stats at launch: Die 485mm^2/Transistors 530 Million/TDP 190 Watts @ 90nm

A10 high end mobile version: Die 240mm^2/Transistors 1300Million/TDP 35 Watts @ 32nm

A10 desktop: Die 240^mm2/Transistors 1300Million/TDP 100 Watts @ 32nm

A10 35 Watts: 300-350 gflop

A10 100 Watts 750-800gflop

RSX+Cell 300gflop (I know RSX has a theoretical 400 but thats just rediculous)

The 35 Watts version is not really necessary PS4 has about 180 Watts budget. So it would get an APU with about 80 Watt probably a 28nm one. With comparabe gflop power as an A10@32nm and 100 Watts.

This is 3 times PS3 Graphic power for just OS and Cpu tasks where GPUs suck anyway ? All that Direct X 11.1 power is just lying there for rendering the os and media streams Its basically more than a Wii U already and it doesn't render anything in the game ? I don't think so Tim.

My thoughts to all the AMD rumors so far:

Lets assume PS4 gets just the best APU 32nm or 28nm. Nothing else. 2gb GDDR 5 are plenty to feed that and the OS. The PS4 would be smaller than the Superslim at launch. And probably around 249. The Superslim has still 2 chips @ 40nm and roughly the same die size combined and it still would be 3 times weaker. This would be enough to render all PS3 games in their current graphical quality at 1080p/30fps with some better textures.

I just cannot imagine Sony being that extreme. Atleast I hope so. But if Sony puts in a 7970m everything changes.

The 7970m in numbers: 2800 Million Transistors/Die Size 212mm^2/100 Watt TDP@ 28nm/2 Tflops

Together with an 20% downclocked  A10 (from 3.8ghz to 3.2) or a 28nm successor with GCN both Chips have approximatley: 400mm^2-450mm^2/160-180 Watt TDP or less/ 4000+ Million Transistors and around 2.5 Tflops meeting Epics demands for Samaritan @1080p/60 fps. All this while being lighter/smaller/quieter and cheaper as PS3 was.

There was a leak  which said PS4 dev kits: Steamroller APU (28nm/GCN) and GPU > 7850 and < 7870.

A 7970m is a downclocked 7870.

The 89xx mobile Chips might be GCN2 since 87xx an upwards are going to be GCN2 and 8970m is probably a downclocked HD8870 again. And the new Kaveri APUs come with the old GCN this patent might help.

Its also a closed system so no need for crossfire/sli and alternate frame rendering which will eliminate microstutters. The programmer can assign each Gpu special tasks unlike on PC where alot of power is wasted due to the lack of optimization.

If customized design or not Sony can easily achieve > 2TFlops pure game power for Samaritan 1080p with what AMD is able to deliever atm, while building a PS4 thats 25% lighter/smaller/cheaper than PS3 at launch.

If Sony doesnt spend ressources on gimmicks thats what we will get in December 2013. Compared to the highend GPUs it will be ofcourse far behind.
