Forums - Gaming Discussion - Xbox 360 and PS3: Success or Failure?

As a business, you have to make money to call it a success.

Overall, are they still both a failure?

Around the Network

who said 360 didn't make money? yes i know this graph with the profit/losses of the different years and the department with 360 is i believe still in the red since 2005 but without the losses of the other stuff (zune, nokia payments and so on) it should be probably in the black.

the next thing is that a product doesn't need to make profit to be successful if it helps to increase the profit of other divisions. i'm not saying that this is true for the ps3 but if the ps3 helps much to push the sony music/movie service, blu-ray and so on the ps3 could have been good for sony even with a loss.

¨360 Big success

Ps3 Big flop

PS3 gamers small winners

Xbox 360 is a big success...

-> They went from 24m Sold to >80m Sold very Soon

-> Xbox Live makes >1 bilion per year

-> Probably over 45m now on Xbox Live or 50m

-> XBLA has huge library and great sales, Minecraft is closing 5m wich is huge

-> Kinect is already way above 20m Shipped and here we have at ~19m sold in 2 years = Huge Sucess

-> Software Sales for 360 will surprass 800m Next Year according to VGChartz and probably 900milion-1Bilion when the Console is killed

-> Giant Brand, approaching next gen many people will stay on 360 due to Achievements, GamerScore, Friends List and so on... Plus if we can connect with 360 Parties and Friends it will be a GIANT plus.

-> Huge 1st Party success, building new Studios to Next Gen so they can make more key franchises. Halo, Gears of War, Forza Motorsport, Fable, Dance Central, Kinect Sports, Adventures...

Ps3 :

-> Went from 150m sold to >80m Next Year should hit 80m

-> Bleeding Money, Software sales are very good but some exclusives lag in sales compared to other games

-> Huge library of games, amazing exclusive games, huge success here

-> Blu Ray did nothing, Sony must have lost milions with it

-> 3D is a Fail, Sony push did nothing

-> Amazing Ps+ Service with tons of Free Games, well worth the money... Psn overall stills lags behind the infrastucture and simplicity of Xbox Live and Steam

Overall is a success in its own way, Sony lost money and its rated to Junk but as a Gamer Ps3 is amazing, games are top notch and the online experience although not quite mathes what Steam or Live offers it stills pretty consistent, overall a solid package from a great Console.

I've been on all 3 and I honestly don't have a better time browsing either of those 2 over PSN.  Steam is a little better but that's because I can use a keyboard which I didn't bother to get for PS3 to search for stuff.  The only difference I see is cost.

It's all about comparisons and expectations, really.

With that in mind, the PS3 failed big time. As a gamer, I love the machine, but look at what the PSX and PS2 achieved, then look to the PS3. 1st, 1st, then last. Sony screwed up the release and initial feature set big time, and have been playing catch-up ever since. Sure, it looks likely the console will probably come 2nd by the end of the generation -- eventually -- but that means next to nothing. Yes, one can't argue that 70 million consoles sold isn't impressive, and the machine is pretty profitable for Sony these days, but the PS3 is still not what Sony had hoped. Sony should be ruling the TV space today, and they are not. The PS3 failed.

I still love it, though.

By comparison, for all the 360 is in an almost identical position to the PS3 sales-wise, and, indeed, has arguably been selling more slowly than Sony's offering from the outset, it is in a considerably better position than many expected. Microsoft were nowhere last generation. Now the company is firmly 2nd in the home console market (2nd equal, perhaps, but second), and their console has taken the US market by storm. Further, Microsoft's subscription service, Live, for all it is objectively worth very little, has been widely accepted by its 360 user-base (but rejected by the PC user base long ago) and is raking in an absolute fortune (primarily because it costs MS comparatively little to maintain -- it's almost money for nothing). So, the console is profitable, has a lucrative subscription service, and has significant market penetration where previously there was none. Further, the console is well regarded, even though almost all the early models died after just a few years! That, to my eyes, makes the 360 ia significant success, but not a complete success.

The title of complete success probably falls on Nintendo's Wii. Perhaps. Though the Wii screwed up at the final hurdle.

360 was a great success, ps3 was not. But when it comes to gamers, both of the consoles were great.

I'm not M$ big fan but 360 was a great success, they had a real bad time in earlier year but they can twisted and make a profit and a larger fanbase.
I don't know about ps3 I mean if we compared it with ps1 and ps2 it was a great failure for sony. But I spend a lot of time with my ps3, in my opinion ps3 deserve better than this.

Since XBox was a defensive move from Microsoft toward Sony, I would say it absolutely achieved what it intended to do, especially in the US.

Playstation not so successful, but not a failure either.
