It's that intangible thing called "cool", which is not at all easy to achieve. If Dell or HP can make themselves "cool" then they will have a licence to print money just like Apple. Cool doesn't last forever though. Sony used to be cool, with the Walkman and Playstation. They lost their cool when they told people to get a second job to buy a PS3. Apple's already started to cause cracks to appear in their cool veneer.
Apple was distinctly not cool for a while and we know where they were headed without a big turnaround. Steve Jobs made Apple cool with the iMac and then the iPod and that was mostly about innovative presentation and packaging, the rest is history.
