Is this an arab cultural thing, or a Islam thing?

Well, neither really. At least not in the sense that such attitudes on women are unique to Arabs, or unique to Islam.

It has to do with a government that puts its political and financial power behind a monolithic, puritanical, misogynistic interpretation of Islam.

Excellent post.

It teaches new vocabs ;D

lol

It's also the most accurate reply to this thread. Also, people in KSA don't dare question it because it might be seen as apostasy, which is something someone can actually be killed for, in Islam.

this together with what Morsi is doing in egypt makes me lose hope for islamic nations..

To be fair, Egypt isn't an Islamic country. The only two Islamic countries, i.e., countries in which Muslim clergy are directly involved in governing, are Saudi Arabia and Iran. Also, I'd like to point out that the interpretation of Islam in Saudi Arabia is a particularly cruel, tribalistic, and patriarchal interpretation, one that is a gross perversion of Islam's basic religious and social tenets.

Right. Arguably Wahabi Islam is just as bad as the tribal religions Mohammed was trying to replace, barring the idol-worship.

Although much the same thing happened with Christianity throughout the course of the religion's life, where many Christian institutions became similar to the Pharasees that Jesus preached against.
