Well someone just provided a newegg link for one that is for under $110.  So I assume that you can get almost any 2 TB external for under 80 in about 2 years at most.

Damn I got my 2TB for 80bucks ... but that was before the flood which killed most of the HDD factories :(
so yeah it will go there someday ... hopefully sooner than later.

Yea, I am sure you can find one under 80 this holiday season on sale somewhere.  If you were to just buy one without looking around much you probably wouldn't drop more than 100-120.  I was just trying to say the overall price will drop within a year or two due to not being a proprietary storage.  I don't remember too many complaints about the people that bought 360 Arcades and having to drop a lot of money for a few GB if they wanted to upgrade their storage space.  Even now they have 360 250GB hard drives on Amazon for 90 dollars (with a 40 dollar savings).

i remember a lot of threads to be honest.  i posted in several of them.  my personal fav was the lastest version of forza (at the time) releasing with a second disk of required install which was larger than the 4gb of the arcade.

i'm not faulting nintendo for allowing easy to upgrade external drives. i love that on ps3 and i love that for wiiU. all the same, buying an external hardrive is just a required for wiiU as the memory cards are for ps vita which adds to the real cost of ownership.

There was a WD Elements 2TB going for $90 just last week, so it's a safe bet you'll see something like that during Black Friday.

The exclusion of a HDD is funny for the WiiU. Just a con on people who buy it and think at the console is cheap @ 300, but than realize it's 400 because you pretty much need a HDD otherwise you won't be playing many games. And what cheap development, to not offer an inclosed space within the console like the PS3. Least they aren't stupid like MS with their branded HDD's.. Not a fan of anything that tries to take advantage of us the consumers.

you're not going to find 2 Tb for $80...those are just nintendo fans trying to downplay the need to the extra money needed to be spent on wiiU peripherals. that said, for $80 you should be able to get around 1Tb which is probably good enough for most.

FALSE.

I have found 1TB external HDDs for less than $60 before, and I've seen 2TB ones on sale for $80.

Granted, that was a special sale price and you usually won't find them that cheap, but point is, I know for a fact that I've seen it - and on Newegg, at that.

Black Friday ill be picking up a 55 inch samsung from best buy so while im there ill be searching for a hard drive. I too am one of those people who bought a xbox kinect bundle thinking well this is a steal than realized i needed a HDD so i bought the 250 for a hundred bucks more. Thanks for the information on the HDD speed, i hadn't considered using a 5400 over a 7200 until i realize you would get no added performance.

Why is everybody going so big with their HDDs? Is 500GB not enough these days?

dunno, I got external drives out the ass though, currently tossed a 500GB old one on my Wii U, working well :)

Wii U only supports USB 2.0 so a USB 3.0 is not needed. Also, USB 2.0 only has a 60 MB/s theoretical max so I suggest a 5400 rpm drive. You can get a 7200 but it will be noisier, more power hungry without any actual performance benefit.

Agree. BTW, real USB performances are even lower (on PC often far lower, on consoles
the more streamlined system could, I hope, limit the performance drop), one more reason
to save money and power and keep the system quieter and more comfortable.

Why dont you just reuse those external HDDs with 200+ gig lying around unused at home? I have three of them, one with 1 TB that I am just using as backups. No worries rededicating one of them to the Wii U.
