Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Bungie: “Xbox Live wouldn’t have made it” without Halo

This in particular seems quite odd (nonsensical even) as with the subscription system the online single user account is ensured. Unless Bungie implies that Xbox Live was initially planned to be free (makes even less sense) :

“They'd been picking our brains as to how it should work and we gave them advice that was counter to how they were thinking originally, things that seem so obvious today,” Hoberman said. “You need a user account system where users cannot create free accounts that are fully privileged at will. People need to have personal responsibility and accountability. That wasn't what they were initially planning. We kind of helped turn it into this really safe walled garden, and over the years they've preserved that aspect, added to it, and made it feature-rich.”

in all cases - wrong attitude - and particularly bad timing

I guess that explains why Xbox Live is a paid service. These restrictions aren't really necessary though. Steam is the perfect example of a free service that isn't limited in any way, while still a secure place to make purchases.

Halo made Xbox.

Now we are just getting started.

They're right. Halo pretty much got online started on XBOX. XBL pretty much grew up with Halo.

Hmm, while I would agree that it needed Halo on the original, I would argue that post Gears/2006 XBL was set-up enough to continue without Halo, still I love Halo.

I'd say Call of Duty 2 was proof enough that XBL could live without halo.

Btw, COD is the most important game for XBL nowadays.

No argument there. In some ways, you can say Bungie was the backbone of the xbox and still kinda is since so much of 343 is made up of ex-Bungie folks and are exclusively making the game that put xbox on the map.

sounds to me like someone is upset it turns out that all they can do is make halo even when they arent making halo.

I think Halo is also better because of Xbox and Xbox Live. I think both Halo and Xbox are better because of each other. Microsoft helped Bungie and Halo become more than just 'another FPS' game. I think they mutually supported each other.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Tell me a funny joke!

This is very true. I wanted an original Xbox so I could play Halo CE and Halo 2 (couldn't afford one though). But I did get a 360 to play Halo 3...that was one of the best purchases I have ever made.

This is true, but what is the point of saying it? Halo made the xbox, and everyone knows it. I think Bungie is a little butt-hurt because 343's newest version has done so well. I really think they thought that no one could do a Halo game justice but them. 343i didn't get it perfect, but I think they came a lot closer then anyone previously thought they would. Props to 343i. Bungie, move on.
