Microsoft Surface Confirms Xbox Controller Compatibility

Microsoft’s new tablet computer/laptop hybrid product ‘Surface’ has revealed another feature, and while it may not be a unique selling point that sees consumers flocking to shelves, it is one which will be of importance to those that are interested.

During a Q&A session on San Francisco (USA)-based ’social news’ website Reddit, developers of the Microsoft Surface confirmed that their product is to be compatible with ‘Xbox 360 USB controllers’, enabling the potential for gaming on the product.

The speaking member of the development team said of their testing process, which unusually did not include the also USB-connected Xbox Kinect motion sensor system: “We used the 360 USB controllers to play with Surface all the time and they work great. We have not tried Kinect yet.”

The product, powered by the Windows 8 operating system (which will also be released on 26 October), is to include USB 2.0 support as opposed to the newer 3.0 compatibility, with the company claiming that they prefer the range of accessories available to use as ‘previous generation input’ opposed to the more up-to-date but slightly lacking in quantity 3.0.

Meanwhile, they also noted that no ‘data connectivity’ features will be available on the device, as they issue their belief that ’a majority of users’ will only be using their device at home. Set to be available on launch day in the USA, Canada, Australia, China, Hong Kong, France, Germany, and the UK region, will Microsoft’s latest product be successful enough with what it is able to connect to?

The tablet has a usb port?! nice.

Does the new Ipad have a usb? sorry if stupid question but I dont own tablets yet.

If so, could be a nice defining feature.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Am I the only one that expected this? It's a windows PC with usb ports and xbox live.

That is completly awesome.

Microsfot Surface really does look good. I'd love to get one myself to replace my notebook.

I really want a windows 8 tablet to replace my pc. Hopefully at the end of the year I can start looking

That would be really awkward in mobile situations, but if you can find a table and pop the kickstand out ... pretty cool.

If I purchased a tablet, though, I really don't see too many times where I would use a function like this, though. I'm still trying to 'get' tablets and how my life is lacking without one. Surface Pro as a tablet/laptop-replacement, though, seems fantastic.

I believe it was also just a week or so ago that you can sync a 360 controller to an Android device as well.

Nothing really new here as you've been able to sync PS3 and Wiimotes to Android for years now. Only reason it took longer for a 360 controller is because it wasn't bluetooth based.

Pretty sure those bluetooth devices could also be sync'd to iOS and WP7+ as well.

You can get the DS 3 to work perfectly with the Sony Tablet S, maybe other PlayStation certified devices or others (with a bit more work)

This is reasonably good news, but you will need full Windows 8 to run Steam anyway
