Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS Vita and PS3 cross-play 'easily' rival Wii U, Sony says

GamesRadar

Sony says almost all PlayStation Vita owners also have PlayStation 3s, a combination it claims gives the Wii U a run for its money. Sony Computer Entertainment America VP of marketing, handhelds and home consoles John Koller told Engadget that Sony encourages players to make the comparison between what Wii U will proffer in November and what many already have in their hands and entertainment centers.

"We tell our PlayStation fans all the time that what the Wii U is offering is something that Vita and PS3 can do quite easily," Koller said. A linked Vita and PS3 game, as demonstrated with LittleBigPlanet 2's upcoming cross-play functionality, offers a similar controller and touch experience with the added benefit of the Vita's external processing power. The Wii U's GamePad, on the other hand, streams its data from the console itself.

Koller gave no specific figures on PS3/Vita cross over, but those who don't own either Sony system would need to pony up for a markedly higher price point than the Wii U. The new model of PlayStation 3 and a Vita together would cost at least $520 at their current prices ($270 and $250, respectively), whereas the Wii U bundled with a GamePad starts at $300.

Koller said Sony has no immediate plans to bundle its home and portable consoles together as a single-package Wii U competitor, though it will consider doing so in the future as "retail asks for it all the time."

This pretty much says everything...

Nintendo and PC gamer

Yes, too bad *no one* has a Vita though, no point for devs in making games which primarily focus on cross-play. And at that price, they can totally forget it.

Besides, no way the PS3/Vita combo would be as seamlessly integrated with each other as the WiiU GamePad which is built for this very purpose. Not without major software overhauls and firmware updates.

Sorry Sony, as much as I like the PS3 and have liked the PS1, you're now just grasping at straws.

easily costs twice as much too. :P

That is not a fair comparison. The Wii U gamepad is just an additional joystick with some extra features. The Vita is an independent console with joystick features.

You know it, I know it, he knows it... But does Sony know it?

Just some damage control PR crap

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Too early to call. As an owner of both it is obvious it has the potential to do everything possible with the Wii u and then some. The problem is games won't support it. Hopefully the LBP expansion is strong enough to faithfully replicate everything the Wii U can do or else cross-play will be forgotten about.

Trust me they know it. But they have to say whatever it takes to sell a few more Vita copies

I love my PS3 I just have absolutely no interest whatsoever in the Vita. Am tripping with excitement for WiiU though. Sony is sucking big time with the Vita. Sad times.
