Hideki Kamiya: PlayStation All-Stars “just a rip-off”
Bayonetta director not keen on upcoming PlayStation fighter.
by Sal Romano [@salromano] at 03:26 PM EDT, August 5, 2012 .

Devil May Cry creator, Bayonetta director, and Platinum Games employee Hideki Kamiya isn’t a fan of Sony and SuperBot Entertainment’s upcoming PlayStation fighter PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, which he claims is “just a rip-off,” presumably of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. franchise.

Here are a few of Kamiya’s recent tweets:

  • “No. I don’t like that game. RT @Mitsjolol Let me ask u in a different way; Would you like to see him in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale?” (Link)
  • “It’s just a rip-off. RT @mirainog I’d luv 2 C the P-100 heroes in Super Smash Bros. though! I agree w/ U abt PS All-Stars, doesn’t look gd.” (Link)
  • “I don’t like rip-off. That’s all. RT @Jumbadabum y dislike something U have not tried? Seems lk a bad attitude 4 a game developer 2 have.” (Link)
  • “And throw morals away. Great. RT @Jumbadabum Fans asked for a PS Smash. Listening to fans + following a successful series sounds good.” (Link)
  • “You are you and I am me. That’s all. RT @Jumbadabum Trying to please fans = amoral? :(” (Link)
  • (This tweet may or may not have been in response to all the PlayStation All-Stars questions.) “To try to please fans, you can do EVERYTHING. Great theory. Totaly against mine.” (Link)

The situation is somewhat ironic, considering Raiden, the star of a title Platinum Games is developing (albeit Konami is publishing and owns the IP), will be a playable character in the game.

Thanks, NeoGAF.

DINO must have enraged him

Not really a surprise. Most developers are pretty sensitive about intellectual property.  I'm sure a lot of developers feel this way and are just keeping quiet.

The game is so close, it's not even trying to hide that it is a rip off.

Though personally, I think ripoffs are great.

This game is just like this other game that's awesome.... oh no... the horror.

SSB is amazing, so I'm looking forward to it but with PS characters.

Good. I was actually a little disappointed when people said this game played differently than Smash Bros. I wanted a complete ripoff.

Ye, but a rip off that people actually want. Stay classy Kamiya.

For those of you who think it plays like super smash brothers, go watch some gameplay videos. This game took the worst aspects from super smash brothers, made them the focus of the game, and then threw out everything that made super smash brothers fun and unique.

Edit: I'll elaborate. It has a 100% focus on special attacks. Percentage damage has nothing to do with how far you get hit, and there are no falling/screen knockouts.

It's like only playing enclosed stages in SSB and making it so only specials can kill. You guys are excited for that?

Hold on to that thought intill after the game releases. I have a feeling sales will say otherwise.

Ugh, except the very core gameplay mechanic that makes smash what it is is completely absent and changed for something else.
