Pokémon Gold and Silver was a bomb! It only sold 23 million when Red and Blue did 30!

Oh noes!

And even worse, Sapphire and Ruby did less!

I love how in this thread that non-Nntendo gamers in other parts of the world are experts on Japanese 3DS download data.

And speaking of data, that is what is missing in this discussion. There is little mention of comparative sales numbers or sell-through numbers and no one to the best of my knowledge has any data on the digital sales.

Finally, when you have an item that you know will sell over th long haulbut are unsure of the short run demand., it makes sense to "over stuff" the channel. You don't want to lose sales because the stock is not there. Think how much sales Nintendo lost by not having Wii units for the first teo years or Activision did by not having Skylandes figures for last Holiday season. No one wants to get Kenner's empty box.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

So... I work in a game store. When we got Call of Duty MW3 in, we got literally thousands of copies in. We had a line to the front of the door for two days straight, but we only sold through about half of our stock. Sell through rate of about 50%

When Asura's Wrath came out, we received about 10 copies per system, and we sold out within two days. Sell through rate= 100%.

So using the same logic as TC, Call of Duty is on the decline, and is going to be taken down by Asura's Wrath. Of all the potential COD killers, I never saw this coming...

Can't believe it's taken 4 pages for someone to point out that the sell through percentage is meaningless.

It's the amount of unit sales that's important, and over 400K in two days is pretty good imo even before you think about taking the amount of digital sales into account. And the launch of NSMB 2 has also had a huge benefit in terms of 3DS and 3DS XL handhelds sold too. A 2D Mario is always a licence to print money for Nintendo - always has been, is now and always will be.

It's not really that sell through isn't useful info, it's just not a good measurement of overall popularity, and it's completely irrational to use it as a comparison between two games.  If NSMB 2 had a 90% sell through rate over the course of 2 days, all that would mean is that Nintendo is an incompetent company who failed to produce enough copies of the game.
