Forums - Sony Discussion - Technical question about PS3 HDDs

People:

Is it really true that I cannot save my downloaded games on an external HDD? Are you telling me I have to die with my 120 Gb internal disk or risk it and change it for a laptop one, expericing the pain of migrating it all?

If that's true, suddenly the Intant Game Collection PS Plus thingy losses lots of its charm as I won't be able to keep most of those games for more than a month, specially since many of them are above the 14 GB...

Nevermind buying new games!!

Oh, I am sad.

umm.. the interntal hdd is a standard 2.5" SATA hard disk drive used on laptops. And no, you can't save your games on an external disk but you can back them up on an external drive but as a backup which you restore anytime you wish.

You can very easily replace the hdd by poping it out and replacing it without voiding the warranty.

If you have fast internet, you can always just delete it and re-download.

What is the purpose of saving them on an external HDD? Depending on that we can try to help you.

Game of the year 2017 so far:

5. Resident Evil VII
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
1. Super Mario Odyssey

You can back them up for later use as said, and there is no pain of migrating at all. I changed the hard drive two weeks ago for ps plus and it was a very nice process.

Migrating to another drive is not a 'risk' or a 'pain' , it's very very easy! I did it back in 2008/9 with zero experience in changing any sort of computer components and I was fine!

You guys being so optimistic about the whole hdd upgrading process are helping me change my perspective on it. I might give it a try.
Thanks!

I changed my PS3 hard drive to 500 GB three days ago, and unless you know exactly what you are doing (Formatting the external hard drive for the backup, restoring the ps3, etc) then I would expect to have problems. It is not as easy as the "How to upgrade your PS3 HDD) websites and videos make it seem. As long as you have your save data files safely in multiple locations such as flash drives, you don't have to worry about too much. Expect to have problems if you are upgrading your HDD.

You cannot play a digital game unless it is on the PS3's internal drive. You can't play it from an external drive. External drive would be useful only to back up game utility data, save data, and other files.

If you upgrade your HDD, make sure you have the external hard drive formatted so the PS3 can read it. Otherwise it will not restore the backup. That's what happened to me, and I had to download everything all over again. Luckily, I had all my save data on PS+, so I didn't lose it.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

^ dont listen to that dood up there, it is as easy as it seems. just follow the instructions and its done. only thing that needs to be emphasized is that you must have the proper screwdriver size. and thats all she wrote.

Also they offer cloud saving, so you never have to worry about your saves. But about your data you can transfer it all. I did.
