Forums - Gaming Discussion - Video games cause young men to “sacrifice their schoolwork and relationships”, says psychologist

Sean Malstrom wrote a response to this CNN article on his blog and instead of blind bashing or non-constructive posts like we can expect in this thread, he actually made a very good point.

AAA post 10/10 would read again, Malstrom.

This is a fantastic example of why Malstrom should just stick to talking about videogames and nothing else (if he wants to be taken seriously, that is). His "very good point" basically is "American women are frigid, lazy bitches".

I mean, men going their own way? Seriously? I always knew Malstrom was a misogynist but I really hope he isn't related to these nutjobs.

I'm too old for this gaming shit.

I find it more like the exact opposite: My real life is stealing away precious gaming time

Exactly LOLOL

How about: there is no especial "problem" with today's young people, and it's always been like this? It's just more visible due to greater media coverage.

Hey, I play lots of games that require long-term goal setting! So fuck you and your fancy "psychology", you headshrinking bastard!

It happens. People just like the escapism that gaming provides and as a result real life suffers.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

There's a simpler (and less obliquely sexist) explanation, in that the world of leisure has simply become a better substitute for what has traditionally been held as the "good life" in modernity. Getting a spouse is hard, buying a house and a car is expensive, and this is a burden that is equally imposing on both genders. One can look to the problem in Japan and simply see the Japanese as a bit ahead of the curve in this regard (though the problems in Japan are also because Japan is simultaneously behind the times with a sexist family legal structure). In Japan there are many young people of both genders who see participation in normal family life (getting married and settling down) as simply too expensive and difficult, and so the structure collapses.

There is a problem somewhere in there, but the blame lies on neither gender, rather the outdated institutions and expectations that are placed on young people.

There's an even simpler and much more overtly sexist explanation: if you are a young man, would you rather (a) play video games and jerk it to internet porn or (b) pretend to care about some yammering harpy's feelings?

I feel like we've had enough of these articles... CNN is just joining in on teh partay!

Wait, they're using Breivik as an example of a gamer who isn't willing to take risks?
