That tablet looks TERRIBLE!! A simple iPad sytle tablet would be much more effective.

Not for everybody, major fail post.  Apple's marketshare was around 95% when the iPad first came out, now it is down to around 60% and is expected to fall more in the coming months to android's gain.

Yeah, not so much.

The iPad's market share is actually increasing. I doubt that will continue but given the iPad's price points, it shows just how miserably Google has done with Honeycomb. Android saw a spike in the last holiday season on the back of the 2.3-based Fire but that seems to have disappeared almost immediately. Google really needs to get developers on board with ICS. The Android tablet app market is literally a joke compared to the iPad-specific apps offered in the App Store.

Now that iPads start at $400, it will be harder for Google to gain traction. If Apple releases a smaller $250-300 iPad, watch out. It would take Google years to climb out of that hole. In the end, MS or Android will consume large portions of the market because they offer hardware flexibility that Apple will never offer. But the longer they sit around with their dicks in their hands, the more time it gives Cupertino to entrench themselves as the premiere tablet manufacturer.

Yah app,e has increased marketshare recently due to price but that's not a great strategy bc it will reduce orofit margin and reduce apple's image as a premium brand

What are you talking about? They're offering year-old hardware now and only taking $100 off the price. Given the advancements in the iPad 3 and the costs involved in it, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Apple is making more money on the $400 iPad 2 than they are the $500 iPad 3. The screen alone eats up a good portion of that $100 price difference.

That seems to be the case.

To go along with that, the original A5 SoC in the iPad also had a die shrink from 45nm when the iPad 2 first released to 32nm when the "new" iPad was released. Since it is merely a die shrink and performance doesn't need to increase the smaller A5 SoC costs less to produce which offsets some of that $100 price reduction. Of course the consumer also benefits if they are buying the iPad 2 with the new A5 SoC as the newer version runs cooler and also gets better battery life than the older 45nm iPad 2.

"The gains themselves are significant. We measured a 15% increase in our web browsing battery life, a nearly 30% increase in gaming battery life and an 18% increase in video playback battery life. Although Apple hasn't revised its battery life specs, the iPad 2,4 definitely lasts longer on a single charge than the original iPad 2."

Ok, but you do realize that price advantages are something that really can't be improved too much if your talking about production cost.  Apple is just pitching a cheaper model which is an ok strategy but they won't be able to do much beyond this in terms of getting even higher sales.
