Forums - Sales Discussion - Current-gen megahits (5m+ sales) by genre

its very easy to prove a point when you set an arbitrary number that will help your point get proven. Tell me now why 5mil is the cut off for games? Is it because the wii has a quite a few very high selling games, and then little in between while the hd consoles have relatively few "mega hits" and a huge amount of games that hover between the 2-5mil mark?

Indeed, and a lot of genres do well on XBLA/PSN rather than Retail, mainly platformers. Can't say the same about Wii in relation to a genre like FPS or something.

How about lowering the limit at 1M+ (a more common milestone), and changing categories ?

Something like :

Shooters (1st and 3rd)
Sports games (including racing)
Casual games (dance, fitness, party games)
RPGs (W-RPGs and J-RPGs)
Action/Adventure
Plateformer (2D, 3D)
Sandbox
Fighting games

Anyone who has the time to do the above is welcome to! (5m was set partly because that would enable a relatively quick check, and partly because the original comment being addressed was based on what sold 20m+ on the Wii, allowing no comparison data from other home consoles).

Maybe it's 5 million because the thread was meant to be about 5 Million sellers? Not another Million seller thread?

OT: 360 had 9 FPS shooters that crossed 5 million?
Wow.

Really? Platformers on XBLA and PSN sell in excess of one million paid downloads?

Yeah a fair few do actually, Castle Crashers, Limbo and Braid did over 1 mill alone on XBLA, and that's off the top of my head.

Those are some very interesting statistics. Nice thread, Declan!

i said on the 1m seller thread had Wii had the most variation in taste and seems i was right

the only genre Wii is lacking (accoarding to 5m sellers) is the shooters genre, and the GTA IV game which is not a genre at all

of course we don't need this to tell that Wii lacks in shooters, but we can tell that Ps3/Xbox 360 lack more genres than the Wii does, and this gen is too shooter based anyway, which is why Ps3+Xbox360>Wii   in sales

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Wii does well in Misc, which is basically party games, and has a lot of sports (which again, using the term loosely). 360 does well in Shooters, Action, Sports, and the same for PS3 but with fighting doing alright too.

Wii has 4 genres with 10, 1m sellers or more, X360 has 7, PS3 has 6.

But like I said, there are genres that do better on PSN/XBLA like platformers.

This isn't even going into the fact we still have too many Wii mill sellers than need adjusting down.

Surely they didn't sell that well on PSN, because at least two of these games were only later ported to the PS3.

No idea what PSN numbers are.

Super Meat Boy did 1m on XBLA as well.

Well, looks like immature people couldn't really stand this thread because Wii was actually winning. When a thread is done to make "x" point (This case, 5 million sellers) the least you could do is respect it.

You know what? We should make a 500k comparison.
