Forums - PC - War of the Roses - The unofficial thread - Closed beta is live - Available for pre order on Steam

So it's about time I made some kind of proper thread for this game...

So to start off the basics, what is War of the Roses? So from what we know it is a 3rd person Medieval combat "sim" with a heavy focus on multiplayer (it also will have a singleplayer campaign), it will feature 32+ player battles in a wide range of medieval settings on dedicated servers. The game will feature a wide veriaty of custimisation options including a "perk" system, 60+ weapons etc. The game is developed by Fatshark (Lead and Gold, Hamilton's Great Adventure) with Gordan Van (a 5 year Battlefield veteran from DICE) in the directors seat. It is also Paradox interactive's biggest project ever (in terms of budget) and their first step into "AAA game development", and is aparently a dream project for the CEO. The game is currently in Beta with an expected release date of sometime in "Sep/Oct - 2012". The development team also plans to continually support the game with new content and patches post release, including free map packs and game modes as they don't want to split the community with map packs, there may also be packs of cosmetic items for sale post release.

The industry needs better character modelers

I can't quite work out whether you are saying that War of the Roses has bad character models and that they need better modelers...

Or more likely considering how good I think the character models look compaired to most games, that War of the Roses has great models and that the rest of the industry needs more modelers of that level...

The bolded.

I was mainly talking about the face at the top. Even though it looks rather high poly, it's not very aesthetically pleasing imo. Same for the environments, high poly, no style.

The texture work is a bit plasticy but I see nothing wrong with any of the actual models, they are extreamly well detailed and look far more realistic than most games out today. The faces are not meant to be aesthetically pleasing per say but rather as a battleworn kinight, more Ron Perlman than Brad Pitt, and I think that effect is pulled off rather nicely.

The enviroments I do agree look rather odd, almost like a tabletop miniature than a real place, mostely because of the flat plasticy texture work and a lack of lighting. But overall I think that the game looks very good, it was never going to be some super stylized game as that would not fit the setting and tone of the game.

see you on the battlefield on low settings :)

3rd person medieval combat sim,i wonder what that means,i have to watch the longer video later as i'm watching some football at the mo

i like 3rd person games and turn base base battlefield games but am not really into the big strategy games where you have to continually update or redo things all the time although i don't really know these games too well so maybe haven't found my type yet

i actually go to the real bosworth and tewkesbury reenactments sometimes where people all dress up and live like they did back then for the weekend or week at the bigger ones, its very interesting and good fun and all the clothes and stalls they have are beautiful, haha i enjoy it

It's an action game, the "sim"part is more about how different weapons and armour are used etc. It should be about the same level of stratergy as a Battlefeild game, so there will be squads and teamwork but you still play it like an action game. Kinda like a larger scale Mount & Blade: Warband if you have played that.
