Will America alone be able to keep the 360 ahead of the Nintendo Wii this Christmas?

Forums - Sales Discussion - Will America alone be able to keep the 360 ahead of the Nintendo Wii this Christmas?

I guess it is just a lull in sales while we wait for Modern Warfare and Skyrim Numbers to kick in. But America was the only place where the 360 was ahead of the Wii this week.

Now what is different compared to previous years is the 360 has been strong most of the year, they have the Kinect, and more so than last year they have a lot of big games!

The Wii has a few heavy hitters, but not as much as the 360, PS3 or even the 3DS. They have been week most of the year, and it does not seem to have a future after this year. What does our little Wii have then that makes it continue to tick?

Weekly Hardware Chart 05th November 2011

51,032 2,485 70,083 123,600
23,173 28,732 68,338 120,243

That was a look at just this weeks sales numbers for all the main consoles.

Here is a chart of 2007 to 2010.

The wii is going to have a price cut, and a new model of the wii come out this holiday season. Along with a new color. Each system will have bundle after bundle after bundle so they are about even on that level.

Already in EMEAA the Nintendo mainstays are making their way back up the charts. Mario Kart Wii, Wii sports resort, etc. But like I said this was sort of a slow week for the 360. PS3 had Uncharted, but we are not talking about them right now.

So after the Modern Warfare 3 and Skyrim hype goes away, will it be business as usualy for the Wii this Christmas?

I do remember last year that the 360 got really close to the Wii. The Kinect was a big seller though. This year the Kinect is not as big. They still have those heavy hitting games like last year, but the Kinect hype is gone. Wii motion control hype has been gone for a while as well, but that has not stopped it from winning holiday after holiday after holiday. Also even now with the Kinect and PS3 Move out the Wii versions of party games, motion games, etc still seem to sell better than it's HD Brothers. My one example that I have is Just Dance 3. It was released on all the consoles, but I do not see Just Dance 3 (360, PS3 or any other system) in the top 40. I do however see that the Wii version is on its way to a million.

What do you all think? Do I have even one good point here? I think so, but I think a lot of things, does not mean I know squat!

The Wii market share doesn't drop sharply for a dead console.

It has done a little better than I thought it would this last part of the year. Still It is far away from its glory days. I just hope for a decent holiday as it slowly starts to fade away. Hopefully the price drop (I think there is going to be one with the new model, right?) will push sales up a lot this christmas. When I see a console for 100 bucks I usually pick it up! Did it with the PS, the PS3, and the Dreamcast. My Wii has fallen from its perch many times from excited kids pulling on the remote. So I may be picking up the blue version this holiday as well!

No I don't think so, I think Nintendo might be able to regain the lead temporarily for Christmas. At a 99$ price tag with LoZ:SS and Kirby plus the whole back catalog Nintendo has a good chance of over taking Microsoft at least for a little while. Maybe capture the market this winter, the problem is this really is Wii's last Hurrah, come winter 2012 WiiU will be on the market and Wii can't be sold cheaper then 100$. This will mean the very quick slaughter of Wii, Nintendo is not likely to release any big software on Wii next winter if any at all.

The question is can 360 hold off WiiU when it launched next year? Nintendo doesn't need Wii to be successful this winter, its damage control its only lessening the blow of 3DS's loss on every unit. Nintendo wants to launch fresh next year with WiiU and that will spell the beginning of a quick demise for Wii.

Although I think it would be a great feit if Nintendo over takes Microsoft this winter. With all the fire power 360 has had in the last two years Nintendo competing with less then a dozen heavy hitters against the best Microsoft/Sony and the third parties have to offer and coming out even near first is amazing!

So with that new model with the GC compatibility removed is going to have a price cut also? Is it going to be $99 now? I knew about the new model but I haven't heard about the price cut.

I suspect that Wii sales in Europe are being over tracked at this point. If I remember correctly even after last years Holidays were over Wii numbers got adjusted down. I think we will see that the Wii sales are not accelerating the way that VGC thinks they are. As for 360 due to shortages last year I expect Europe sales to be similar to last year.

What I dont know is if in Europe the 360 is getting the deals like it is in NA so far this year. Wii is not getting the deals in NA this year that it did last year and 360 is getting the kind of deals in NA that the Wii got last year.

Only mention of this so far is a BlackFriday deal at Walmart and Sams club.  Blue limited edition Wii for $99 without any games.  The thread below has all the Black Friday deals if you want to know what consoles are getting special deals.

Yea, the no games part kind of blows.  It would have been a decent deal if they included two blue wm+ remotes.  The package doesn't really look good for someone that knows the value (I am assuming it also has dropped GC support) but to some of the mindless drones they will only see the $99.

The good thing about this that wii games are cheap, some people may just buy this just because it is so cheap, some have games already and its pretty cool. The ps2 does not come with any games anymore.

GC ports gone... is it really that big of deal anymore?

I suppose you do have a point.  They could get the 99 dollar and buy a few Nintendo select games.
