Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 6.5 million units in its first 24 hours on sale in the UK and North America, eclipsing Call of Duty: Black Ops as Activision's biggest day-one seller. Surprised?

Activision has already chalked up $400 million in sales - $40 million ahead of what Black Ops managed in the same period, and $90 million ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's effort. According to Microsoft, the new Call of Duty also set a peak concurrency record on Xbox Live after two days on sale.

"We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories," Activision CEO Bobby Kotick commented.

"Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings," two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time."

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg thinks "Call of Duty is more than a game. It's become a major part of the pop cultural landscape. It is a game that core enthusiasts love, but that also consistently draws new people into the medium. It is the most intense, adrenaline pumping entertainment experience anywhere.

I remember seeing some spoof video on Youtube about how Halo was going to ruin the world or some shit like that. It turns out that COD would have been the better target for such a thing. Not saying that I agree but reading this reminded me of a fake type of news report in that Halo video.

No Bobby you made the game for the greenbucks. Cannot wait to get my copy. It would be interesting to see the PS3 numbers as well.

I played at my friends house and he just started and he was ranked around 4.6 million th lol.

So that means around 4.6 million PS3 users have logged in to play MW3.

So total sales are massive.

I just checked the 360 and we are at 5.4mil, i'm surprised the numbers are so close.

That means 10 million copies have been sold and more for sure.

Also for many PS3 users especially in NA, they bought a PS3 to play multiplayer games for free especially COD.

Mutliplayer is not great, to many sneak and flank attacks. Cannot have long range battles..

Some maps are pretty nice and fun like in Black Ops, however the maps should be more based on nature rathern then an urban environment.

Man that is just crazy. I wonder if they can keep it up?

well there are not 10 million playing at the same time lol...


The multiplayer will still see millions of millions of more users till X-mas.
There is no big game for the casuals coming out for the XBox and PS3, so

The numbers are huge, and there are a ton of Xbox users that do not have Xbox live.

COD multi player is dominant, even BF3 could not overtake a one year old Black ops on Xbox Live and not even on the PS3.
