Is Boxer Day a U.K holiday?

Boxing dayis probably the closest thing the U.K has to a national holiday.  It's celebrated by most of the English speaking world.  According to one of my old friends, who used to live in South Africa, it is called 'Goodwill day' there.

Boxing Day is the 26th December and is a bank holiday in the U.K.  The holiday originated for household staff and servants, who would have the day off in order to be with their families after working Christmas Day for their masters.  The term 'Boxing' comes from how the masters would give a box containing presents and luxury food to their household staff to take home.  That's what I was told years ago at school anyway.

There was talk several years ago of making a national U.K public holiday, but not much has been heard since.  Armistice Day (11/11) was a popular choice, but given the fact that it is the same day as my birthday, for that reason Battle of Britain (15/09) day would, for me at least, be good

St Patricks Day. Not sure why it's celebrated in US

Could someone please tell me why St. Patrick's Day is such a big deal? What makes it any more special than any other saint's day?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
