Hands On: Sony’s HMZ-T1 Is an Amazing OLED 3DTV. That You Wear On Your Head.

Sony's new 720p OLED 3DTV with 5.1 virtual surround has a 150-inch screen-equivalent and costs $800. But it weighs less than a pound. That's because it's worn on your face. It looks crazynerdo; you're going to want one.

Personal TVs are uniformly dorky. I've tried several, and all—I mean all of them—are the kind of horrible experience that makes you think the future is a very asinine place. To date, other than watching hard core pornography on an airplane, I've not yet seen a compelling use case for wearable televisions. And then I tried on the HMZ-T1.

Not only did this sell me on the concept of wearable TV, it was one of my better experiences with 3DTV which I've likewise been skeptical of. There was a simple reason for both of these things: This was one of the more immersive entertainment experiences I've yet had. When I tried playing Gran Turismo, I found myself pivoting my head to look left and right although that has no effect on the display (of course). It was just a natural reaction. I felt like I was in the driver's seat of a car, and was scanning the road as I normally would. When we popped in a 3D movie, I actually ducked a bit as a shark swam overhead.

The picture is solid as well. Although tiny, the eye-sized display appears to be 150 inches. Because there are two distinct displays, one for each eye, there is no crosstalk, and of course, no need for active shutter glasses. They're rather awkward going on, but you quickly forget you're wearing them, or at least I did.

The thing the HMZ-T1 does well is melt away. It's lightweight at 14.8 oz. Adjustments at the nose bridge and temple let you adjust the width of the eye and ear pieces so you can get a perfect fit for your face. The over-ear speakers (and this is impossible to overstate) positively deposit you in sound. In fact, this entire thing is less immersive than it is enveloping. I felt like I was insidethe game.

It's also terribly dorky-looking. Straight up nerdtown. But you're not going to be wearing this in public (I hope) and you won't care.

It will be available in October, and we'll have a full test before it goes onsale.

The big downside? These suckers cost $800. That's a pretty massive price tag. Yeah, Sony's got its cool back, but can anyone afford it?

Personally, I'm excited beyond belief. I'd EASILY dish out the cost for these. The tech inside them is just mind boggling. A little spec not shown here, for all you interested is, each individual OLED Screen is a 0.7 Inch 720P Display. The pixel density in that is nothing short of UNBELIEVABLE.

All the impressions are oogling over it, calling it one of, if not the most immersive entertainment experience made in this kind of form. All I can say is, I want one, however, I will wait...

Why I will wait is rather obvious, Sony has been talking about VR, this piques my interest, for obvious reasons. Imagine, the Playstation 4 with a more advanced version of this bundled in. We're talking 1080P, as well as a screen equivlance that completely encompases ones peripheral vision. Add some head tracking (Gyroscope, etc etc), hell, I don't know if I would ever want to leave my house... and... well... need I say more? JUST TAKE MY MONEY SONY, TAKE IT DAMMIT!

I have to see it face to face because this looks to good to be true.

Damn near every major tech blog/site out there has tried it out at some point. This was shown as a prototype back at CES by Sony. However this is the finalized product that will be made for the masses. Apparently the thing is nothing short of incredible.

I'm into this, but I want one with built in gyroscopes so I can move my head and view a full-3D world.

do want

JUST TAKE MY MONEY SONY! Seriously, I don't think I've ever been this hyped up over a piece of tech before. I love the idea of having the portable equivalence of an IMAX Theatre on my head.

Yeah I noted that in my comment portion after the article. The best part about this is an implimentation of this is rather easy by all means. And is more then likely a given when SONY brings out a revised version of this in a year or two. Like I said, I expect the PS4 to impliment something like this. Maybe not as a direct part of the PS3, but something akin to the move, as a Peripheral. Then again if they can get the price down to a sweet spot, then who knows what's possible. All I know is, dammit, its not a matter of if I want it, its a matter of when!

But this thread's title is a lot more informative so this thread is the one we're sticking with.

Anyway, I've made up my mind. I'm getting this thing as soon as it becomes available. I suspect wireless versions of it coming out eventually, as well as cheaper versions from competitors. I don't care. This is going to be one of the first times I become an early adopter of a new TV format. I'm getting this thing within the first month that it's available on the market. I got my money right here!

Thanks! Didn't see that posted, well, I may have but more then likely overlooked it considering its title. Also, if you, or anyone else for that matter finds any more emerging info on the device, I'll make sure to edit it directly into the OP.

And I really can't decide if I want to buy it, well I DO WANT TO BUY IT. But I'm only a Sophomore in college working part time and barely getting any hours, I doubt I could save up the money as needed by the time its releasing, especially considering its releasing before the end of the year. All I know for sure is I WANT IT. However, with Sonys next console on the horizon in a year or two, like I stated before, I readily suspect a revision of this headset aligned with the PS4 launch. Head tracking, hell eye tracking if possible (LET ME DREAM DAMMIT) will absolutly sell me on this device. I really can't begin to fathom the potentially monumental step in Gaming we may be taking in the short time of only 2-3 years from now.

Bundled with every PS4 in 2014.
