i actually thought nico bellic was pretty good character.

anyone who liked rdr but did not like gta 4 is crazy imo

Why?

RDR was a way better game IMO.

to me they were literally the exact same games. And I mean literally right down to the gameplay. The one big difference was the setting otherwise the shooting, cover system, guns were the same. I don't understand what made RDR much better. To me GTA 4 was a fresh experience, then RDR came along and recycled the same gameplay, same type of side missions, same hill billy charachters (never enjoyed it as much since i thought i was playing the same game), then L.A Noire came along and i didnt even go 2 hours into it.

What made RDR better was the fact that it felt like a sandbox again. It brought back that feeling of freedom that was lacking in GTA IV. You could hunt, play poker, capture outlaws, attack gang hideouts, gamble, break horses, etc. In GTA IV all you could do was go bowling with Brucie. The freedom has always been the essence of what made the GTA games so fun. I had more fun screwing around in san andreas than I did playing the missions. There is NOTHING to do in GTA IV and thats where it failed.

But I'd also have to disagree about the game mechanics. GTA IV's cover system was broken, RDR improved it. GTA IV did not have an option to free up the camera, RDR did. The camera was probably my biggest pet peeve with GTA IV. It drove me NUTS! Plus riding a horse in RDR was a lot more fun/less frustrating than driving a car in GTA IV.

Last but not least: John Marston>>>>>>Niko Bellic.

If by "fresh experience" you mean, exactly the same as GTAIII, GTAVC and GTASA.  That's just my opinion though, as upon purchasing and playing through a good chunk of GTAIV, I couldn't help but feel like I had been here before, followed by extreme bordem and constant car jackings/running things over/crashing.

However, when I played Red Dead Redemption, I got a brand new feeling.  I could easily tell that GTA was hidden behind the western style but it never bothered me.  I loved every minute of it.  But, I grew up on westerns and own way too many of them today.

You make a good point but for me GTA 4 was much more different than the other GTAs. The other GTAs literally felt like a sandbox where i can just mess around and do whatever i want. GTA 4 on the other hand had an actual serious story and vibe. I even liked the new driving mechanics.

It seems that you and I look for very different things from our GTA games. Why would you want linearity from an open world game?

have no idea

well i really wanted a good story in GTA and GTA 4 delivered. Most open world games distract you from the main plot therefore Story never comes out as strong. In GTA 4, for me, good story/charachters and the open world had a good mix. The same reason I like Mass Effect. Its sort of open world yet very linear.

Nico Bellic is a great character.

I actually prefer Nico over Tommy. What can I say I prefer a character over a stereotype. Sure the games are full of crude humor, but that doesn't mean everything has to be crude. Nico may not have the childish dialogue, but he has a gasp actual personality. He isn't thoughtless, and he is a lot less psychopathic then Tommy. It was nice having Nico providing a more rational running commentary.
