Forums - Sony Discussion - Shuhei Yoshida: Wii U it will likely inspire PS Vita developers

I predict lots of Vita / WiiU multiplatform games. The structure is so similar I'm surprised no one mentioned it yet.

This would create a 3rd party paradise. One game all platforms.  Sounds interesting.

I don't understand why people think it will be so easy for the Vita/PS3 combo to be linked. I didn't see anything in the Sony conference that really made me think they could be linked in a way similar to the Wii U. I understood the Ruin demo, and talking about being able to play the game on both platforms and such, but nothing was said about being able to use the Vita as a controller or extra screen for PS3 games. Did I miss something? (not being sarcastic, really did I miss something?) I'm not saying it's not possible, but some seem to have jumped to the conclusion that it is inevitable.

Probably because the PS3 and PSP can already be linked in some way through Remote Play, where games and movies on the PS3 can be streamed to the PSP. It's not that much of a stretch for PSVita to have a little bit more functionality than that.

Thats through cloud saving not infa red streaming. Sony would need a whole new system and technology to do what WiiU is doing. Im not saying its impossible for Sony to do im just saying its impossible on the PS3. Remember its the WiiU console that does all the work for the display on the controller. The controller itself has no processor so all the work is done by some kinda technology in the console.

Just a heads up, i doubt the WiiU controller uses infrared, infrared is a line of sight technology and it would limit the controllers use to the same degree as the current WiiMote/Sensor bar setup.

As far the PS3 being able to do the same thing with NGP -- your right that it would be harder for SONY to do, but it is still possible -- all it would do is basically require games to support split screen, with one screen for the tv and one for NGP. Ofcourse WiiU will likely perform better, but that is to be expected by a system built around this tech.

Infared is waves and it can and was used on the Wii to transfer content from the console to the controller. Mii's and sound could have been transfered to the Wii mote via infared and i know infared is able to stream content depending on how much power you put towards it and how much ports to send/recieve data. I dont understand what you mean by line of sight technology but if you mean it has to be directly in front the sensor bar to transfer data then that statement is far from true.

By line-of-sight i mean the Infared emitter needs to be able to see the detector to send or recieve data, also the waves cannot go through walls. I also assumed that it would use directional Infrared opposed to diffusional infrared simply because while directional infrared works up to about ~50 feet, diffutional will only give you ~35 feet or so (kind of depends on how high your roof is, what kind of material its made out of/contains etc. since diffusional infrared uses an object like a ceiling to reflect the infrared to get around the need to be in line-of-sight at the cost of speed, signal strength and range) So i would say that WiiU will use some sort of WiFi technology, it'll prob be a 2.4Ghz band tech like 802.11b/g/n or bluetooth/a zigbee WPAN. Though i pray that we will get something cool like 802.15.3.

Anyway the main point of my post is that PS3 and NGP are perfectly capable of mimicing the WiiU technology wise, though due to a lack of third party interest and the desire to push the PS3's hardware for all users we probably won't see many games take advantage of it out side of a few ports of some features (eg. the ability to NGP's screen as a touch pad for touch controls, or to move content between PS3 and NGP's screens via WiFi.)

you don't know what you're talking about here watch this :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EswJEYDm_cg

there has been streaming of video and game content between psp and ps3 for years now since vita is more powerful it is highly feasable that it would offer increased streaming features

If this becomes a must have feature on a console, where does that leave Microsoft, like 3 years behind everyone else limping in with their own solution that will look like a knockoff? Hey, maybe the next XBox console will include video outputs to multiple screens.

Is anyone else noticing a pattern here. Seriously, has Sony EVER innovated in their entire history... We have grown so used to them copying Nintendo and for some reason Nintendo is the one who is receiving the flak... You guys call it an awful product, but your already talking about how Sony is gonna copy it any day now.... WTF is wrong with you guys.

At least Microsoft came up with their own crap like Xbox Live and Kinect, but Sony has nothing. They just go straight to Nintendo and Microsoft. You guys really want a company who doesn't take risks, and relies completely on graphical innovations and their own bastardized versions of other peoples technology to win the console war. At least go to Microsoft, they have your GTAs and your overly saturated FPS market, they are more than open to getting your RPG's and all that other crap too.

Yeah but you will still need a peripheral to stream live gameplay to the vita with zero latency. Its easier to just design a console to do that.

I guarantee the PS3 and Vita wont be able to copy what the WiiU controller can do without a peripheral. So what is Infared cant penetrate walls? Lots of waves cant penetrate walls and nothing has to see anything to send/recieve data. It just has to be in range and data will be sent/recieve....

I kinda like Sony but I think its their fanbase that make them look bad. They will only pretend they dont like something until Sony adopts it. Im not aiming anything at anyone in this topic and I would love to see Sony try to do what Nintendo is doing but I dont think it will be possible with the PS3 and the Vita. The connectivity between those 2 devices is something completely different than that between the WiiU and its controller.

you're not really making any sense as i demonstrated the psp is already capable of a wireless connection with the ps3 for streaming games and content.... this :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EswJEYDm_cg

contradicts just about everything you've said more specifically "you will still need a peripheral to stream live gameplay" that is exactly whats going on in the video the psp is used to control the ps3 and stream the game to the psp... you either didn't watch the video or didn't understand what you were seeing

btw sony has taken several risk across both hardware and games before both microsoft and nintendo attempted motion control gaming on their consoles sony used motion cam tech for gaming, sony took a risk when using bluray for the main format for ps3 because it wasn't accepted as a viable format at the time etc for games instead of constantly rehashing the same franchises all the time sony consistenbtly brings new ips to the table examples are little big planet and starhawk but of course being a nintendo fanboy you fail to understand any of that
