Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Thoughts on Nintendo's Press Conference

Finally the last of the Big 3. What are your thoughts on the Nintendo PRess Conference? Did they Steal the Show?

Wii U

Project Cafe will be called Wii U, and although Nintendo never reveiled the specifications of the system, it looks as if it can handle PS3/360 HD games no problem. The controller however, do you really think you can play Ninja Gaiden on that tablet controller? Nintendo only announced 1 official Wii U game, but they did reveal 10 other 3rd party projects for the system, one of which is exclusive.

These are so far the only exclusive Wii U games

  • Lego City Stories
  • Super Smash Bros

and here are the other announced titles, many will be available at launch

  • Aliens Colonial Marines
  • Assassin's Creed (Likely Revelations)
  • Datman: Arkham City
  • Darksiders
  • Dirt
  • Ghost Recon Online
  • Metro Last Night
  • Ninja Gaiden 3: Razors Edge
  • Tekken

Nintendo 3DS

The next major part of the show was the Nintendo 3DS, also a relatively new console. Nintendo showed clips from 15 upcoming 3DS games, but the only new announcements was Luigi's Mansion 2, and Super Smash Bros 3DS. However Starfox was given a September Release in Americas, and Kid Icarus and Mario Kart were given a Holiday 2011 window. Lets hope Kid Icarus isn't delayed.

No news was given on PAper Mario 3DS, but that was the only game Nintendo missed.

Nintendo also announced that the 3DS will get a Virtual Console serive, similar to the Wii, and it will get games older then the NES (Game & Watch games?). Many old IP's will get 3D upgrades, and 3D Classics Excitebike will be given free. There will also be a 3D Pokedex added to the camera features mode

Wii

Nintendo didn't dwell on Wii too long, which is a shame. The only newly announced game is Just Dance 3, and more footage of Zelda was shown.

EDIT: Nintendo actually announced a few games outside the show. However many of them are no longer excusive (Just Dance 3, Zumba Fitness 2, etc) Alltogether, Nintendo announced

  • Fortune Quest
  • Mario Party 9

No information was given on Pikmin 3, XenoBlade, The Grinder, Dragon Quest X, or The Last Story, and no new 1st party title was announced

Nintendo DS

Although Nintendo has announced 1 last first party game for the DS (Kirby), no news was shown for the system. Since it's been replaced this was to be expected, but they included it in their summary at the end. Unusual

Conclusion

Nintendo did a lot to show us that the 3DS and Wii U will get much stronger 3rd party support then before. So it's likely that Wii U see's more then the the handful of Nintendo exclusives and 3rd party shovelware. Overall I was quite happy about the show. I wish Nintendo talked about Pikmin 3, and maybe announced a new Wii game, but they kind of dropped the ball there. However other then that, they did well.

Since most of the games talked about were 3rd party games for the Wii U, or were 3DS games with a 2012 release, this fall Nintendo's lineup still isn't too special.

For Wii it's limited to

  • Just Dance 3
  • The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

For 3DS we have

  • Kid Icarus: Uprising
  • Mario Kart
  • Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions
  • Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D
  • Starfox 64 3D
  • Tetris Axis
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

So all in all, if you have a 3DS, you will have a great fall, but DS and Wii owners are kind of let down. 1 1st party Nintendo game for all of 2011.

I don't understand why people have such a huge problem with the tablet controller, the button placement in relation to your fingers is the exact same as traditional controllers, the only difference is that your hands will be a few inches farther apart.

That doesn't add any muscle strain or anything else that would equate "discomfort" - if anything, it will feel like holding a PSP.

Controllers are molded into your hands, it would be very difficult playing a game which involves fast button pressing, or a shooter on a tablet. Metroid Prime really works best with a Wii mote. The tablet only works for slower paced games like a 2D Mario or a JRPG.

However this Wii-U thing really gives rise to good shooters now. Imaging Battlefield with a Wii-Mote, or Ninja Gaiden.

Nintendo's conference was definitely the best out of them all no doubt about that. I'm surprised they've managed to win two years in a row. Also Mario Party 9 and Fortune Street were announced for the Wii: http://e3.nintendo.com/games/#/wii/
Wii U looks great, so much potential. Everyone I've shown it to have been amazed.

I am a little confused, though; Reggie has said in an interview that more Wii/DS games will be announced through the next couple of days.  Does that mean we may get more unannounced games toward the end?

Probably, go to the web page http://e3.nintendo.com/, Nintendo has been updating it with new content (like last year),

I hope tomorrow we have more news

According to various hands-on, the tablet controller shape so that the buttons and triggers falls comfortably to your hands/fingers.

The bottom is not... flat.

Just a dull, underwhelming conference to say the least. Too much hardware talk, not enough software. As you said, if you are one of the few who own a 3DS or are thinking of getting one soon, it was a good show I guess. But to the 86 million and 147 million DS users, it was pretty dissapointing.

As I've said before Nintendo's conference was easily the best this year, though that says as much or even more about Sony and MS this year than it does Nintendo.

None lived up to my expectation

I'll have to play it before I can judge. However the way it is now, I'm not too interested. I love the Wii-Mote, and the tablet is a big controller, which I usually don't like.
