Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 error code lights... Help Please

A friend of mine has a PS3 that he tried to repair and is now having issues with it.

He was trying to fix a problem in that the ps3 would turn on and play games but over heat after minimal use. He said it would display a message about heat and than turn off. He had already taken it apart and cleaned out all dust and mentioned that the cpu paste was dry and cracking/flacky.

I told him it may need new paste and that the old may have been worn out. He bought Arctis 6 i believe and replaced the paste, but now he gets this when it turns on: a green light, than blue light, than red, and than the red light blinks. I am hoping it is a loose wire or something or maybe he didn't apply the cpu paste correctly. Does anyone know what that light sequence means and is it possible to fix. I have not seen the ps3 myself yet and am only going off of what he has told me. Any help is greatly appreciated, he doesn't have much and is starting a family so buying a new ps3 or paying for repairs is not an option.

*bump* anyone have any help or links to a good ps3 repair webpage? I will probably have access to his ps3 this week end to fix. Any help is appreciated.

This is one site that has a video fixit guide. Found it while looking for help on upgrading my hdd. Never had any problems with my ps3 so cannot vouch for the accuracy of it.

green light = ps3 on, turning on/off

blue light = disk in the system, being  put in the system or being ejected

red light = ps3 is off/in standby

flashing red light = overheating

Thank you very much! He probably did not get the paste on correctly then. Hopefully we can fix it this weekend. He will be happy. I had found a list of light codes but it didn't make sense how there were so many going off and with out seeing it myself I couldn't figure it out.
