Everyone will have Newfoundland accents in the future.

LOL if only this could happen

Interestingly I've found that the accent of a foreign speaker isn't based on the media the person has watched but the accent of the person who taught the student - eg. if a person has a US teacher, that person will have a US style accent. But if it is taught by a person from the UK the student will end up with UK (regional) accent.

You'll find a place like South korea with strong ties to US mostly have a USish accent (If your from london - try asking a student for a glass of waTer..they can't understand you! You have to hold your nose and ask for warr-er) Where as a place like India or any country with a strong tie to the former empire will have a more English-style accent.

With the goverment backed British Council teaching English in most countries of the world (it's the largest English teaching school in the world) and the desire of most countries to have International English taught to there students you'll find a stronger English based accent rather then US.

That said every region will keep it's own accent for mainly years to come as Media has far less effect then family and friends who you actually speak to rather then just listen. Only if everyone becomes totally isolated from the surrounding population and rely totally on media for any form of comunication will that change and even then it will be based on what they actually listen too.

Spelling however might go more US way due to online chat correction being mainly US based.

So. (mainly) English-style Accent/pronunciation with US spellings. Each country - and area of a country will maintain it's regional accents (unless there is super moblity and no borders which I assume will create a world accent that is different from everything we have today)

Indian accent. More Indians speak English than anyone else.

But really English will never be the first language of the majority of the world. So accent will still be determined by the person's first language. Even among native English speakers there'll never be one accent...look at USA and the UK, huge variations within a single nation.

while English is the offical language of India, the people taught english have to go to school, and out of the 1.1 billion not all get the luxary of school. The crowd is with china, tho when India do gets richer, english will become wide spread over the crazy amounts of different languages in India.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

Wrong, here in Sweden we only learn British English, in school. Yet 90% of the people when they speak English have an Amercian "accent" (used the quotes since really they have a Swedish accent hidden under there). Tv, internet etc, effect us much more than our English teacher, lol.

I never had any problem with finding people who spoke English on my travels through India, and that was back in the 80's and early 90's. I would hazard a guess that more people in India speak English than in China precisely because it is an official language. Hindi is the other official language, but because it's not the native language of many of the States a lot of Indians prefer English over Hindi as their number 2 language (neutral territory). It would be interesting to know the exact number but I would not be surprised if half a billion Indians had at least passable verbal English. A lot fewer would be semi-literate to literate in English.

canadian accents so I could point and laugh!!!

How more people speak English in the world how more varieties you get and in some regions the variety English is also teached to the students so you get regions where they (would) understand eachother very well lets say  Thai/HK english but for others who are for Europe/USA is harder to understand;.

Secondly I read that west-EU countries are spending overall less hours of the English study and more hours in other languages like Spanish..

Spanish that also is becoming more important in the USA..;  And here in Brussels the students who have the intention to start a business in USA or want to do business also are recommended to learn the Spanish language..

Hahahaha, English as the dominant language. :P We'll all be speaking chinese in the near future.

But if it will, probably American, even though most countries teach traditional English, Tv and the internetz reform it into American.

its funny how 300 million chinese speak english, making it the largest english speaking nation in the world.

i doubt one accent will rule them all.

on the Mum -> Mom thing: English started in England and because of that Mum is correct while Mom is wrong, like honour, colour, valour etc. I dont know what the USA have against U when "U"SA is so widely used.

It originated in England, but even British English has evolved substantially since it started evolving here in the US, so your argument is flawed.

Additionally, the US is the largest primarily English-speaking population in the world. In fact, you can combine the populations of every single other country that speaks English primarily and they still won't add up to the population of the US. Americans outnumber everybody else substantially, and as they say, majority rules.

English is never going to erase all other languages. What happens these days is that people around the world learn English as a second language, while maintaining theirs. People can speak more than one language, you know?

I speak three languages and I'm learning a fourth, but that doesn't mean I'm going to start using English to talk to my children, or to anyone in my home country.

Besides, these things change. On millenium ago, Latin was the "world" language. One century ago, French was the global language. They never erased other languages. Now it's English, but it may be Chinese soon. I know of quite a few people that are learning Chinese or are taking their children to Chinese classes.

So basicaly, each region will keep their accent. Heck, even in English speaking nations the different regions have kept their asccents.
