Holy crap! It dropped $600 within a week.

Erm... 999-299=?

Wow, with other price cuts it will be like 49.95 when it is released. :D

The missing $100 is actually through accounting tricks.

Have Nintendo and Acti-Bliz not taught you anything?

remember people were blown away when sony announced a ps2 for $299. a full $100 less than the dreamcast. Soony has been putting high priced products out lately but i think they may have realized what made PS2 soo successful which was features, good price, and games.

If this is true then sonyy have gotten features down as well as good price. Now the gamez

The Dreamcast launched at $200, a full $100 less than the PS2 did ...

that's just a placeholder.

Their rear side touchpad alone is gonna increase the price by 150$.... (yeah i'm bitter cause i just don't understand the use for it...)

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

thats too specific to be a placeholder but then again it looks too good to be true.

i think their assuming by the time it launches early next year, the manufacturing price will drop and they may be able to offer it at that price or make a small loss on it to gain market share from nintendo and smartphone gamers.

IF this is true I hope it causes Nintendo to cut the 3DS price to 200$ US or even 225$. Sure the thing will sell out the first month and maybe this Christmas but next Christmas..... a 250$ DS with 3D and graphics between the 360 and Wii versus a PS3 portable with 3G costing 300$ might be a risky set up. They could always price cut it next year and give us earlier buyers 50 free nintendo points cards, though......

But then they would look like Apple's iPhone :P

But I guess it's also bold to to keep the price to show their confidence in 3D effect with no glasses.

$300 is still a high price.

PS3 at $599 was a AMAZING DEAL.  Blu-ray the most powerfull processor on the market.

But who cared? It had a elevate price.

Sony is making a loss for the expectation of not having to drop down the price too much in the future....but probably when the sales go down, they will be obligated to slash the price to remain competitive.

Being that the launch date is 1/1/2012 I suspect that this is just guestimate/placeholder data ...

While retailers may get the official price before customers, I'm not convinced that Sony would have settled on the final launch price (roughly) a year before the system releases. After all, they will probably make that determination when they have a much more final estimate on the manufacturing costs; and they see how the 3DS sells at its $250 price.

Given the fact that the first quad core chip with similar specs has only just been sampled to manufacturers the price may be right given the likelihood that the handheld won't be out until 2012. The time between sampling and products is often up to 24 months, so even if they got it out quickly 12 months would be pretty unprecedented in the industry.

Another thing you'd have to consider is Nintendo probably takes a large margin on the 3DS whereas Sony doesn't. If Nintendo released the NGP it'd almost certainly cost $399 because thats how they operate their business. Sony on the other hand is willing to break even or even lose money in the short terms in order to meet strategic goals.

Knowing Nintendo's (traditional) business model, I would expect that the $250 price for the 3DS is probably pretty close to the cost of manufacturing, packaging, transportation, etc (essentially all of the costs of the product to get it into people's hands) ...

Beyond that, I don't disagree but I just want to add an additional possibility with the NGP. It wasn't that long ago when console manufacturers would release a system in Japan 3 to 12 months before it would launch in North America; and then it would launch an additional 3 to 12 months later in (most of) the rest of the world. This has given many manufacturers the ability to make their systems seem like they were "technology from the future" while still being released at affordable prices ...

just researched it. your right my mistake. i thought i saw a documentary somehere suggesting dreamcast launched for $400

well since that's the price of a ps3 it might be true but most likely i'm guessing around $379
