I have fun doing some better stuff than watching a camera thingy doing camera stuff. That type of thing was nice when I was dazzled by discovery science some years ago and they used to do all sort of stuff with cameras.

They even did an hologram thingy using wiimotes:

 

 

Have fun watching how 2 wiimotes and some other aparattus can deliver this. Touchable holograms. So far ahead of old camera tricks =)

Old camera tricks? wow you seriously betrayed your ignorance with that statement. Kinect is the first cheap and publicly available 3D camera open to the mass market.

The video you showed is using the IR camera on the wii-mote, its nothing unique to the controller, any IR camera would do just fine, they probably just used it because its cheap. The videos I posted are completely new and innovative things created in the matter of a few weeks by people in their own homes and universities.

you point out how kinect is great because it is the first cheap and publicly available 3D camera open to the mass market and then go on to say that the thing with the wii motes isn't impressive because you could do it with any IR camera and only used wii motes because they were cheap.

and so by your logic all the stuff that people are doing with kinect aren't impressive because they could be done with any 3D camera and are only using Kinect because it's cheap...

Cool to know Kinect is able to do the same thing as Beat Sketcher; I was wondering if it would get something along those lines.

This is the truly incredible thing about Kinect, and the secret to its success. People do things with Kinect that it as easy to do with existing devices, but when it's on Kinect it's amazing and innovative, new and cool. Just like they co-opted controllerless gaming as new and innovative and cool.

The key point is that IR cameras are available to anyone that walks into an electronics store. Good luck walking into an electronics store and finding a cheap 3D camera though, heck good luck finding any 3D camera besides kinect.

What Metralha is trying to say is that the things kinect does can be done by any other camera, that is a complete lie. Thats not to say that the wii-mote isn't very good at what it does but to act like everything that kinect can do can be done with a wiimote is complete bullcrap.

Anyway, this is an example of how people are using kinect, how they are thinking differently.  12 months from now I expect to see some pretty cool things from kinect, perhaps even on XNA.

I thought kinect couldn't detect small hand movements?

No I haven't. The device uses the two IR cameras to track the users hand position, however all the software and other hardware needed to achieve that is custom built by that research group. You can't just put two IR cameras together and viola achieve 3D tracking, it requires a lot more software and hardware than that. Not everyone has a multi-million dollar research lab at their disposal.

With Kinect all the software and hardware comes complete out of the box and even an amateur hacker can achieve full body 3D tracking. I don't see why this is so hard for you to understand?

Not to mention thats not even his argument. His argument is that there is nothing Kinect can do that any old camera or wii can't. That is false, the wii has no way of tracking your entire body.
