ok, I'm in NY and i can download the update to the photo channel for free. Also, I can already give gifts and it didn't cost me 200 points, so i think your reading something wrong.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

I updated and it didn't cost anything. I didn't update the photo channel though. It did do the shop channel update, when I got Pokemon Snap it asked me if I wanted to send it to someone else. The animation on the Wii screen changed a little also.

I Blame Wii Fit!

Sounds like a bug or confusion - was definitely free for me.

The Shop Channel update is just a firmware update as well, so no way they can charge for it.

Odd thing - the Photo Channel update was *only* 4 blocks... wth? Did its job though - we now have a cute picture of our cat, on our Wii bootup menu :)

Where did you hear or see that it cost 200 points? Most likely as other's have stated you saw your current points left and thought they were going to charge you those points. Which they don't!
