Forums - Sales Discussion - 2010 vs. 2009 Console Software Sales

I was a little bored and I made this spreadsheet that compares the year 2010 with 2009 for Wii, Xbox360 and PS3 software numbers, using VGChartz data. 2010 starts with Week Ending 09th Jan 2010, while 2009 starts with Week Ending 10th Jan 2009 and ends with Week Ending 02nd Jan 2010. The numbers in the the Totals row are only until numbers from 2010 stop, so the comparison can be fair. I highlighted with green the numbers for the console that had the most software sold in a given week.

Edit: it now includes software sales for DS and PSP, see sheet Handhelds. And I filled the notable releases rows, in these I included games that sold at least 500,000 units worldwide in their release week, or 250,000 in one region, unfortunately this will make it so that games that start low but end up selling a lot not appear.

Edit2:I included PS2 software sales in the sheet Totals. As well as adding to more to that sheet.

Some things of interest:

-in 2009 there were only three weeks where Wii software wasn't the highest, in 2010 there are already four;

-in the same time-frame the PS3 has sold 19,599,286 more software in 2010 than in 2009;

-so far Wii software was outsold only twice by both Xbox360 and PS3 software: once in 2009 when Modern Warfare 2 was released(Week 45) and once in 2010 when Red Dead Redemption was released(Week 20);

-the highest sales for Wii in 2009 was in Week 51: 16,299,950.

Includes data until 3 July 2010.

Seems like every console is improving YoY! Great stuff! :)

The BuShA owns all!

Good info.  ...To me it makes it tough to judge the health of the gaming industry, When you have analyst like Pacther that doesn't seem like they even attempt to use numbers, and he is becoming the BIG voice of the industry.

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

This is why I love this site so much....you get to see all sorts of data for everything videogame related.

I have updated it to include software sales for DS and PSP (Sheet2), and included in Sheet3 some totals for the industry.

Things of interest:

-so far the DS has sold 12,234,618 less units of software in 2010 compared to 2009, while the PSP sold 1,279,990 more software;

-the current generation consoles and handhelds have sold 20,732,216 more software in 2010 than in 2009.
