Forums - Microsoft Discussion - MS: Hardcore will buy Kinect first!

I can definitely see Core gamers buying this... for someone else. "See honey, gaming is fun!" I don't see it as a runaway success, but I do see the a lot of sales as hooks to try to get other household members into gaming.

With the Kinect, Microsoft is hardcore washing the gaming industry in a way that mulinational corporations have taken the green movement and has green-washed it. Hardcore in this case are those who buy Kinect. Microsoft is flipping it and playing a bit of psychological warfare on the gamer base just to get more units sold.

Any gamer not hiding under a rock knows the fallacy of the hardcore vs. casual gamer. Hardcore gamers are your cutting edge gamers who love the edgiest mature games with the best graphics, multi-player focus, and a story that may take 50 hours to complete. Casual gamers are gamers who game part-time, meaning they will play games as a group activity in the living room, are intrigued about games that allow one to workout while gaming ala Wii Fit, and prefer games that can be put down without requiring a lot of catching up to do when they may play it a month or two later.

I say it is a fallacy because gamers are gamers. Distinguishing oneself as "hardcore" is taking an elitist, authoritative position when in reality, everyone is playing games for the same fundamental reason. FUN. No matter whether it is 100 hours into Final Fantasy 13, playing Wii Fit to workout, playing Rock Band while drunk with friends, weeks of ingame time played in Modern Warfare 2, or countless hours spent roaming in Red Dead Redemption, games are played for fun. Those who dub themselves as "hardcore" are painting themselves with a bullseye that screams douchebag.

Who is any of us to rain on what another finds fun? Do I come to your house and call your mother's dinner a casual dinner because she spent less time in the kitchen preparing it than my mother's hardcore dinners?

you all do get the fact that core titles won't be made overnight, right? Microsoft and other publishers already stated that core games for Kinect are coming but we will see them next year. yeah, they could just rehash old games and tackle on Kinect support like Sony did, but unlike Sony MS actually get what they have to do to diferential themselves from Nintendo while Sony just spawned few Wii ripoffs and tackled Move controls on games nobody will use that controler for.

while MS made few Wii like games they made wnough original games to diferential Kinect from Wii. Dance Central is great core game to me or bridge title just like Rock Band and Guitar Hero.

Perhaps he knows something that we as casual viewers do not. Based on the games presented at the conference I would say I find it hard to imagine hardcore or even core gamers buying the product for their own use. Not to mention why they would want to make their happy box a social experience for the entire family. I sincerely hope that Microsoft isn't making the mistake of confusing their demographics for one another. I am afraid they may already be softening their definitions, and they may want to generalize their experience, and as anyone knows from the Wii that lends itself to a mediocre experience. You can't make games that everyone enjoys equally, because the established gamer is far more competitive, and wants a deeper experience.

Somehow I find it counterintuitive that Microsoft would make a mistake that Nintendo wouldn't even make. After all Nintendo didn't release the Wii without a few core/hardcore titles. They even had a handful of mature titles less then half a dozen months after launch. Hell in this case they don't even need to fully support Kinect they could just implement voice recognition into their games. I will be kind of shocked if Halo Reach doesn't support some modest use of these features. After all how hard could it be. How hard would it be to implement retroactive patches to dozens of games just for added functionality. That is a question for another thread though.
