With the Kinect, Microsoft is hardcore washing the gaming industry in a way that mulinational corporations have taken the green movement and has green-washed it. Hardcore in this case are those who buy Kinect. Microsoft is flipping it and playing a bit of psychological warfare on the gamer base just to get more units sold.
Any gamer not hiding under a rock knows the fallacy of the hardcore vs. casual gamer. Hardcore gamers are your cutting edge gamers who love the edgiest mature games with the best graphics, multi-player focus, and a story that may take 50 hours to complete. Casual gamers are gamers who game part-time, meaning they will play games as a group activity in the living room, are intrigued about games that allow one to workout while gaming ala Wii Fit, and prefer games that can be put down without requiring a lot of catching up to do when they may play it a month or two later.
I say it is a fallacy because gamers are gamers. Distinguishing oneself as "hardcore" is taking an elitist, authoritative position when in reality, everyone is playing games for the same fundamental reason. FUN. No matter whether it is 100 hours into Final Fantasy 13, playing Wii Fit to workout, playing Rock Band while drunk with friends, weeks of ingame time played in Modern Warfare 2, or countless hours spent roaming in Red Dead Redemption, games are played for fun. Those who dub themselves as "hardcore" are painting themselves with a bullseye that screams douchebag.
Who is any of us to rain on what another finds fun? Do I come to your house and call your mother's dinner a casual dinner because she spent less time in the kitchen preparing it than my mother's hardcore dinners?
