Halo 2 had a nearly 20 million installed base when it was launched. Halo 3 has a nearly 50% attach rate and thats what primarily held back its sales and why it dropped so fast. It will have long legs though. In the end, I can see it at 10 million + sales.

10 million is plausible but highly unlikely. 360 would need lifetime sales of well over 40 million for this to even be considered. Not to mention I would assume most of that would come from America, meaning 8 million lifetime in America. Which I don't even thing many of the GTA and GT games from the PS2 did that in America, and it had an install base in America alone of 40 million. So that's really a tough call but I won't rule out 10 million but its highly unlikely just for those reasons.

Highly unlikely? I think Halo 3 will surely sell another 4 million units. It hasn't even had one holiday season yet. The title just launched...10 million will be easy.

Your thinking about the sales in too much of a linear pattern. It just doesn't work like that. You need to think of outside patterns, trends, and of course remember that sales work in weird ways sometimes. Not to mention the kind of game Halo is will sell in different ways then a game like Wii Play.

No I'm thinking about Halo 3 sales in a pattern that reflects the series. Both the original Halo and Halo 2 had longevity in the sales market, Halo 3 wont be any different. Also it's the number 1 game on it's console, those type of games tend to have long legs. I wonder what's making you think otherwise.

There is always competition! Imagine if Halo 3 launched in November. Would any xbox owner buy Cod4 or Assassins Creed? No way! It would have completely cannibalized all their sales. Thats why they didnt launch in Nov. Only a hand full of games can compete head on with Halo and those games are not it.

But Grand Theft Auto IV is one of those that can compete with H3.  That is my main concern for long range sales for H3 in America.

GTA4 may compete but halo3 will still have long legs

Everyone forgets that ioi hasn't updated his sales figures in Europe past the 3rd week. Halo 3 sold 1.2m units in Europe/others on week #1, and around 450k week 2 (which is around where in stands).

So H3 is more than likely 300-400k above the 5.99m unit sales.

Then add the fact that last week, it sold around 160,000 units worldwide before Christmas.....

Because of all of that, Halo 3 is most likely going to pass 7,000,000 units before the end of the year. With 7m already sold, Halo 3 has the advantage of selling for another 2-4 years to the expanding userbase.

And thats where Halo 3's sales will wind up - determined by how many sales the X360 gets. If the X360 winds up around 40m total users.......13m could happen.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

How are they competing when they are gonna be released almost a year apart. By the time GTA 4 comes out, Halo 3 will have done 70%- 80% of its life time sales.

yep 13m is a possibility

The Xbox 360 should almost certainly pass the hardware sales of the Xbox and it should do so by a fair amount. Halo as the most iconic franchise on the system will benefit the most from this.

Combined with the series' long legs and you can expect Halo 3 to remain in the sales charts for the next three years which provides ample opportunity for the game to not only outsell Halo 2 but also to sell over 10 million units.

Halo 3 wont be forgotton. Gears of War is not forgotten because of Halo 3.  In fact they help each other. The same Halo 3 owner will probably buy GTA 4.

It will all depend on how well the 360 sells if the 360 can reach 25m my next year it is possilbe
