Why the numbers doesn't match company annoucements? Is this just about only the gaming divisions?

If so, what about the years? Are they considering the fiscal year itself or just the year the announcement is out?

So many things unclear in this one.

Fiscal year.

And just the gaming divisions

I think you mean the divisions the gaming related products are in. Small difference but it should be clear that MS at least have other products in that division that are non-gaming

That chart is missing early PS1 years. With those numbers Sony's gaming division is still in black.

I thought this was fairly common knowledge and was even referrenced, on the MS side, in the recent stuff around investors.

MS is still very much in 'sunk costs' mode with regards to gaming, where it's making a profit currently but it still hasn't seen a true return in excess of the original costs sunk into getting into the industry.

Sony's situation is perhaps slightly misaligned given the focus, as I don't see PS1 and therefore it may be that in total, over all there consoles to date, it would still be in the 'black' to use the relative terms of the OP as really the PS1 data should be included as the goal seems to be looking at all consoles combined profits/losses to date.

The red for PS3 really shows how the high cost of development and slow start hurt financially, although I guess that's easing now.

I'd imagine Nintendo's version of that analysis would look exceedingly black.

If you can find the PS1 numbers feel free to give´em, this is as far as the internet can provide aparantly. Anyway, I'm willing to bet that during 1994-1995 Sony was in the red on their games division, launching a console is always expensive.

With small search I actually found them from vgchartz. =)   Link!

It would be interesting -- for the sake of comparison -- to see Nintendo's profit numbers over the same period.  Everyone always decries every decision Nintendo makes, but it never seems to lose (much if any) money.

Also, both of these current numbers could be of concern to investors as each company is about to launch motion control add-ons, which may or may not make money. Also, another set of price cuts is being speculated, which could also impact profits unless it is associated with a corresponding cut in manufacturing or other costs.

I believe that in that chart that I provided the amounts are based on historical yen/dollar ratio so it is more accurate.

Wow... no one cares.

Or was this common knowledge?

Check my link justnext to the words Nintendo is D00mmmed

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

Then why the 2010 numbers? Fiscal year will be out in some eleven months.
