Forums - Gaming Discussion - How much do trophies and achievements matter to you?

Nothing I find them annoying.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I feel like they would be more worth it if unlocking a trophy or achievement meant unlocking something in the game itself or if you get all the trophies or achievements you unlock some sort of redemption code for the download networks.

and yes they do add more to the game and increase replay value. however there are many trophies and achievements that are complete nonsense or would take 100 hours to complete

honestly i thought i would care more about trophies... but i dont D:

then again it will give me something to do if theres a gameing drought but considering how far behind i am i doubt that will come soon

Shit is worth more.

They mean nothing to me. To me it's about beating the game and getting everything I possibly can in it done and I don't mean going by achievements or trophies. I mean what the game has to offer, content wise.

  • 2010 MUST Haves: WKC, Heavy Rain, GoWIII, Fable III, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, Darksiders, FFXIII, Alan Wake, No More Heroes 2, Fragile Dreams: FRotM, Trinity: SoZ, BFBC2.
  • Older Need To Buys: Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Deadspace, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2.

There is definitely more to list that I want, but that's my main focus there.

I play games for enjoyment and entertainment, I honestly couldnt care less about trophies/acheivments.

I love achievements!
I'm gaining them since 2005, it's a great innovation from Microsoft.

I love Trophies too, but since my collection is far greater on the Xbox side, my trophies don't mean much.

THE PERFECT SOLUTION? If Microsoft and Sony would merge Achievement/Trophies together.
No matter the platform, it would add to your gamerscore!

My Gaming Setup

I ignored trophies until uncharted 2
Gives you reasons to use all the guns in many games
I think its fun to compete with my friends with 360's because I have the PS3 and 360 and play ps3 more and still have as much or more achievements then them, without even trying to get them all

They're completely meaningless but they make me play more games and make me play games in ways I normally wouldn't.

For instance, I just finished my complete playthough of Mass Effect (all missions except the random collect Asari writings and what-not) which I normally wouldn't have done except I wanted the rich achievement, completionist achievement, and Quarian ally. I was also trying to get the level 60 achievement, but finished at level 54. ;_;

Hell, I even used the shotgun because I wanted the achievement and ended up loving using the shotgun (I could one-shot most everything at the end of the game with it, and even one shot things from as far as way as the rifle could just hit things).  If there wasn't an achievement for killing 150 with the shotgun, I probably would have just stuck with the assault rife and never touched the shotgun.

Achievements and trophies even make me replay games!  Games like Uncharted, Bayonetta, and Bioshock I would normally never play more than once but since I get something for completing them on different difficulties or in different ways, I'm driven to do that.

And looking at the Wii, there are games I would like to try but I'm much less encouraged to play them because I don't get anything to show for it. I have Silent Hill shattered Memories which is supposed to be great, but I'm just not motivated to play it. I loved what little bit of New Super Mario Bros Wii but I didn't finish it and I doubt I will because there's no achievement driving me to finish it.

Or I guess I shouldn't say I don't want to play those Wii games, but I would rather play games with achievements/trophies first.  I don't think I'll even like Heavy Rain, I'm sure Deadly Premonition is actually bad, and I know New Super Mario Bros Wii is better than both of those but I would much rather play the other two first.

A lot of people love to call achievements/trophies meaningless, and they are in the end, but they are probably the greatest thing to come out in this generation.

@twestern

I couldn't agree with you anymore brother. Trophies/Achievements help to encourage gamers to explore their games to a greater extent.
