Nice avatar : D I always like looking at it for some weird reason. Kind of sad that Kurt couldn't be a normal human being.

haha cheers! I love cats & Kurt so thought it'd be a perfect avatar :D

He was a tortured genius, I guess his music wouldn't have been as impactful if not for his neurotic personality, still sad he couldn't bear being alive :(

GOW Ascension wasn't what you told me it'd be ;_;!

I'm sorry! :( ... You know, I tried so hard to hype the game and stay optimistic because almost everyone was negative about it but I knew deep down that it would disappoint since E3 2012. Even with my relatively low expectations it wasn't what I hoped it'd be... pretty depressed about it. If it weren't for the fun + unique multiplayer it would have been a minor disaster!

The multiplayer is a 9.5/10 in my opinion, single player deserves a 7.5/10 as it's solid and can be fun & interesting but mostly boring, unambitious, some changes are for the worse and has a weak story. I was so shocked, a studio that created three games in a row that average around 95% dropped the ball so hard... I still can't get my head around it. If this ever happens again I will no longer declare myself a fan of the series or studio! Their next game has to be their best yet, only then can I truly forgive them, lol.

For months I've been trying to think of what went wrong, I have come to many conclusions and expressed my disappointment at Sony Santa Monica & Todd Papy on Twitter but they refuse to acknowledge me and think everything is fine & dandy... ;(

Sorry for the long post! I suck at being concise.

Personally I found the SP to be an 8 and the MP a 9 :P. I actually scored the overall product a 9/10 myself because I agree on the MP being spectacular. The SP itself lacked any real drive and even with the scale of the titan at the beginning and the ending, it just didn't have that feeling like the other three main entries. It's still a great SP as I personally find the gameplay rather good and theres just something about the environmental artists that keep me going despite the lack of a proper narrative. I did enjoy my time with it but I can't see myself going back and that's something that is a shame since I can popp in GoW3 at any point due to those really amazing moments.

I do share your pain but oh well, let's hope their next project is more ambitious. The lead designer wasn't even working on this one, he's on a new IP (probably Stigs project).

    on 17 May 2013

I think if this game was MP only, it'd actually do better to be fully honest. Priced lower too. It's rather fresh in a generation full of shooters.

    on 17 May 2013

I think I gave it 8.5/10 overall. I mean, it's not a bad game at all, compared to Dante's Inferno, Heavenly Sword or pretty much any other hack 'n slash this generation it's still very good. However, compared to God of War III, II or I? It's mediocre.

I liked the spectacle of the first & last big bosses but they weren't as well-realized, epic, memorable or well-choreographed as Poseidon or Cronos. Also everything in-between them was pretty boring, they made so many cuts due to multiplayer that it just doesn't flow well and they cut what was meant to be the biggest boss fight in the history of video games, here's a link to it: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=375871425865831&set=pb.225875837532058.-2207520000.1368823067.&type=3&theater by the way that tiny spec at the top just a little to the left from the middle is a ship for size comparison.

What confuses me is why they wasted Polyphemus and Stheno in MP instead of having them as awesome bosses for the SP campaign!?

The gameplay is quite good but I'm not to fond of the new parry system and I think the new rage system sucks. I also miss having other main weapons and think there was too much climbing around. The puzzles were sometimes needlessly annoying too!

I miss the old composers OST too, the music in God of War: Ascension is still good but it's soulless and music is so important for films & games, I think that's probably the main reason this didn't feel like a proper GoW game.

The story was way too small to carry a 8-10 hours game and it wasn't told very well. Not enough interaction between characters, Kratos' motives weren't made clear enough and the Furies weren't great antagonists because we don't have enough of a reason to want to kill them. Also he didn't even interact with his family, only illusions of them which sucks.

The game was also too buggy. On my first play through I came across 2 or 3 game stopping bugs and it had awful sound sync problems.

I think it would have been a MUCH smarter decision to make it a budget downloadable MP game to see how fans would take to it. I wish they didn't waste the prequel story, it could have been amazing. Imagine as playing as Kratos as the general of the Spartan army at the beginning of GoW1 fighting an army on horseback, more time with his family to truly feel for him when you kill them by accident (which should have been playable). Just could have been so much more, I wish I was the director!

I hope Stig Asmussens new game will restore my faith for the studio, he's a very smart guy who's passion for the industry is almost palpable and I'm confident that with him directing their new IP will be amazing, but even then, who's going to direct the inevitable God of War IV? I very much doubt Papy will be allowed to, haven't noticed anyone else who seems like they'll be up to it.

Holy shit, that's a lot of writing, again, I apologize for the long ass post! I just can't help it! :P

    on 17 May 2013

Haha was a good read, I agree with most points but one of the + was the feeling of an adventure. Sadly the story like you said couldn't carry the game, but it still felt amazing to see the places we went to and I personally enjoyed the rage meter. I usually only play trying to avoid being struck when I play on Hard mode on other GoWs, but in this game, even on normal: They kind of force you to be on your toes.

I can see myself really disliking it if I rolled like the game intended to (seeming as there really is some sort of delay between rolls) and the parry was useless as shit. But I very early on noticed that you can like roll-nonstop if you tap sprint (L3) and then roll, repeat x100. Super fast rolling xD it was fun! But yeah, I'd rank it the lowest which to me is on par with Chains of Olympus (8/10).

Dissapointing for GoW but still great compared to other games like you said. But the Multiplayer still brings it up. I am however starting to really wish there was a freaking 1v1 mode or atleast a mode where the Blade of Chaos would no longer be a deathstreak. For too long do I go on a killstreak and barely die and my olny deaths are constantly by those god damn blades.

The pickups such as weapon and health are also getting a bit annoying. I just really want a man on man -> use what you've got kind of thing :P. I always play 2V2 since thats really the only time where I might get alone with someone else.

And I do wish they had alluded to something regarding GoW3's ending. The painting was all we got and it was really a bit of meh okay. God before Ascension, I kept thinking maybe we would infact see more of Kratos as his days as a General and such. Maybe even kill his family. And some part of me thought SSM was gonna do a 360 turn and actually have Kratos travel in time or something.. ANYTHING to progress the story forward. But what they did was try to tell a story that really didnt needed to be told and was very thin.

That was my biggest gripe and it really impacted the entire experience.

    on 17 May 2013

Haha, thanks, I do tend to go on a bit too long but I do have a lot of thoughts I want to share.

I agree with almost everything you said, I hate having my kill:death ratio ruined when I'm on a kill streak due to someone using the blades of chaos and killing me 2/3 times on a small map.

Weapon pick ups and people using magic constantly (Zeus class) is ANNOYING as fuck! And a 1 vs 1 mode would be great. I think they should have an option to play every mode with world weapons and magic & health gone so it's a proper test of skill and not who can pick up an overpower world weapon or abuse magic.

I was hoping the game would feel more adventurous, like traveling to Persia, Cyprus, Turkey... you know just places near Greece where the Greeks had a presence or rivalry. I also would love to see different environments, I want forests think with foliage, Kratos trudging through the snow, walking across a desert to an ancient monuments/temple... I think I was expecting WAY too much.

I think the rolling was a bit more delayed than previous games but as you said there's ways to improve it by pressing L3 or square while rolling to cancel the dodge animation. I don't know who thought the new parry system was a good idea, it was so bad I hardly ever used it.

I should explain that whilst I didn't like the way the rage system was implemented I like the idea of it. I just don't think they should lock moves until you fill up the meter, they should just alighting expand every combo and makes hits more powerful. I think a combination of the old style rage meter and the new would be great. It'd be kind of like Castlevania: Lords of Shadows system (amazing game btw!).

Mate, since the end of God of War III I've been driving myself mad thinking about happens next. I really hoped that they would've shed some light on that but nope, nothing but a fancy Easter egg that doesn't make sense. I wish there was some time travel elements in Ascension where the game ends with Kratos going into the future to see if Ares manages to overthrow Mt. Olympus but discovers that he's one who did so and he sees himself dying at the end with Athena pulling the sword out and disappearing. He'd actually the person who moves his own body (post-credits cut-scene GoW3) to be buried and it'd end there.

Then God of War 4 starts with Kratos at the edge of the mountain side looking at at the carnage then a blinding light and a thunderous noise shakes the world as Godly being fall through the black hole in the sky that's visible at the end of GoW3. Kratos is confused as hell and seeks out Athena for answers but is quickly stopped and advised/aided by a mysterious person/ghost who briefly explains what happened but is interrupted when in typical fashion a huge boss fight happens who Kratos just can't beat, he dies and is sent to the the Egyptian or Norse underworld (which will be vastly different to Hades).

Kratos is helped by the same friendly stranger who fills Kratos in and explains Athena's plans to align herself with the Egyptian and/or Norse Gods who she either creates (she's of a higher existence so who knows?) or summons to align herself with and becomes their leader and together they want assume control of the Earth and mankind with Athena hoping to be the next Zeus but much becomes much more powerful... Obviously the way my GoW4 story idea started won't be possible but I think the rest of it is pretty cool! :D

I probably need to stop with my crazy ideas, it'll end up being something completely different (hopefully even better and an amazing return to form!)... I wonder if I wrote at a full story and sent it to Sony they could read and be somewhat inspired by it, doubtful although...

I wrote a story and gameplay ideas for a competition (came 3rd) where I had to write a story for a GoW game with Zeus as the main playable character explaining his story. It even involved fighting in the Great Titan vs Gods War! lol, imagine how epic it'd be fighting multiple Titans at a time in a massive open area. It was sent to Stig Asmussen who has apparently read it, I wonder what he thought. :P

    on 17 May 2013

Just realized my idea for the ending of Ascension/start of GoW4 wouldn't be possible without some multiverse bullshit... still would have been a better ending though! :P

    on 18 May 2013

Haha yeah, I've had all crazy sorts of wishes for a GoW4 too. I really don't know where SSM will go with the franchise. I don't like to feel uneasy like that :( Rumor has it Stig is working on a new IP so part of me thinks maybe Kratos is done for good and maybe GoW is done for good. I wouldn't want that to be honest since they really can change it up a bit without having to abandon it but I guess time will tell.

    Fuck this forum LOL spam

    on 18 May 2013

lol, had to day it three times eh? ;D

Yeah, after Ascension I think it's best that they leave the franchise alone for a little while. There will probably be a spin off for the Vita but I don't want to see GoW IV unless the team know exactly where to take the series and are still passionate about it.

I have a strong feeling they're going with Egyptian Mythology onwards. There were hints in Ascension about going with Egyptian Mythology with that traveler you see on the way to visit the Oracle and a note on the floor. I don't know what that weird Easter egg is hinting at but with the screen and electronic control panel it seems to be hinting at something else, perhaps their new IP.

    This is interesting: http://www.gow3forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3904

    on 23 May 2013

Hopefully we'll see what SSM is doing @E3, hype!

    on 23 May 2013

Haha, I think I've learned my lesson about hyping games. I will watch Sony's E3 conference (couldn't give a shit about Microsoft's, they really messed up) expecting the worse but hoping for the best. I don't want to hype anything only be be disappointed again, Ascension basically ripped my heart out through my back and tossed it to the dirt (yes, I'm a drama queen,,, uh...king).

I really hope Watch Dogs, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, TLoU & Beyond Two Souls deliver. I need something to cheer me up, TLoU comes first so all the burden of my misery rests on its shoulders! From the recent things I've seen of the game I'm looking forward to it! I'm not going to hype Sony Santa Monica's new IP until I see it and hear Stig talk about it, you can tell when something's going to be good when the director sounds passionate! Todd Papy never really sounded like he loved the game he was directing, he's worked on GoW for almost 10 years, he and the team probably wanted to get it out of the way to focus on something new.
