Damn straight. In a series that mostly thrives on brash machismo, raw and poignant moments like this hit like a lighting bolt from a calm sky.

For me that's always been a strength of the series, that while its easy to write it off as the ultimate dudebro game on the surface, there's genuine heart beneath that crass exterior. (At least in the 360 games, can't speak for the more recent ones)

Exactly, I think if anything the fact that the game deals with every issue up to this point by ducking into cover and trying to get close enough to bury a chainsaw inside in the problem then the absolutely record scratch stop to this scene made it a million times more jarring to the player. Especially that reveal from what Dom is hoping to see... to what actually stumbles out and falls into his arms, the music choice as well, such long slow notes to let it sink in really slowly that she is completely gone and Dom has basically failed his mission in what he wanted to do, going from having his heart telling him to go rescue his Wife... to just pure rage of "I want to kill them all" His lines as well... "what did they do to you?" followed by his pained grunt, like... he knows exactly what they did to her, he has seen it happen thousands of times, he fucking knows exactly what they did to her.

It's fantastic, nothing close to that level of emotion in 99% of other games imo, his own sacrifice in the 3rd game was a bit of a shock but really... after this scene in 2 you know he just kinda wanted to get back to her in any way he could, his death if anything was a happy moment in a way.

Yeah definitely one of the more powerful gaming moments of that generation for me. There's very little to I can find fault with in Gears 2 in general to be honest. It's probably my GOTY for 2008, though Dead Space and World at War are close too.
