I think it's one of those things that comes in peaks and troughs over the years. Yes, nowadays the slightest hint of any bigotry from a person can be leapt on and used to ruin them... but I don't think that's a whole lot different to how in the 1950s (and arguably even as late as the 1980s) saying that you thought the Communists might have a good idea or two was a good way of instantly losing your job and destroying your social status.
