In Spain is very similar..., we use here "la plei (play)" for everything related to consoles.

Same over here, we say "el plei" as well (i guess "el" is the only difference), so you have friends that will ask you stuff like, "te la pasaste jugando play el fin de semana?" and even if you were playing on your PC you just answer yes, since its understood that we are just talking about video games here.

The popularity of the brand along with the fact that its shorter to say play instead of "video juegos" made it stick.
