I actually really liked the story in BotW. I mean the world was defeated basically. They remnents are hiding out at the edges of the realm and it's up to you alone to go and save it.
I liked the backstory told how it was through the memories. It was a perfect story, imo. Only missing more present day story telling. You were kind of just fixings wrongs in the past. There was no present day story, if that makes sense.
Add onto it Breath of the Wild 2's story and hopefully the two just go so hand in hand that it will feel like they are part of a trilogy or something.
Yeah it was just tons and tons of "show, don't tell" I loved that, where you wander into a town which is completely obliterated and find a bunch of rusted destroyed swords and shields laying around the ground, it doesn't need a 20 minute cutscene showing what happened there... you know there was a town, they tried to defend it and they lost hard. I'm smart enough to work backwards from those scenes and they play out so dark in the users own head because you're just witnessing the aftermath of what happened and doing the math in your head, so the cutscene fight of how bad it was is down to your own imagination which is one of the best writing tools. Loved coming across things like that while in the rain and Link was shivering... chilling music and can't even put on a metal sword or shield because lightning might hit it... at times that game just made you feel powerless against the story and the elements in some of the best ways I've ever seen in gaming.
