He can't defend himself anymore.
Anyhow, I'm more willing to believe he was innocent, he gave me the impression he was just desperately trying, although with quirky and kitsch tastes, to live again the childhood his horrible, greedy father stole from him and his brothers, not trying to abuse other kids' one. A tormented soul, but not an evil one.
