Agreed. I think good games are ones that involve and engross the player in the mechanics as much as possible.
I like Uncharted (never played Last of Us), but a lot of what was highly revered in the game was the cinematics which to me are cool but not the main criteria of what I want in games. That's why I enjoy Nintendo games massively. The core game is never jeopardised even for the story.
And btw, stories in gaming are generally massively overrated.
