Of course there are no guarantees that it will work, but there would be no harm in consulting with someone trained to deal with this issue. And if he sees a good psychiatrist (admittedly hard to find), then they will work with him to decide what is the best course of action. Personally, I tried to get out of my "slump" for about 20 years before getting on medication, and I wish I had done so far sooner.
