All mid-engine Porches have had the fuel tank in the front, in front of the firewall. 

There really is a benefit to having a huge chunk of iron or aluminum between you and whatever is ahead of you.  Not to mention the silliness/stupidity of a gas tank in front, which could leak, and a hot engine and exhaust in back that can run over the leaking fuel.
