12% of overall consumers would be unhappy without backwards compatibility.
What percentage of *early adopters* would be unhappy? That's the number that matters. Why? Because those are the people who are going to be ushering in and helping to grow your new fan base. (I'm saying this because I would imagine that the early adopters are the ones who care more. It's easier to invest in a new console that was just released when you can use it to replace your existing one).
