Snakes character is heavily based on a b movie character Snake Plisken from escape from new york...

I wouldn't describe it as stupid though personally. Just a weird mix of fantasy, serious, tongue in cheek, political, etc. Sort of like Tarantino.

This does seem a lot more over the top.
