You're pretty much SOL with Sony unless you want to pay good money to fix their faulty work, best thing to do is find a friend that knows how to repair consoles and just find the right part.

 I agree with most of what you're saying, but perhaps he should exhaust his options with Sony, first.  Once he has someone crack the case and attempt a repair, all bets are off with Sony.

 Actually Sony will still repair it as long as his system isn't modded at all, opening up the system only voids the warranty that he doesn't even have, nor has Sony ever been known to extend it cause they love money, they expect you to pay them money to repair it, or pay them for another system all together.
