Sony has always had bad customer support and has never covered a single issue with past PS1 or PS2 problems, they like to not acknowledge these issues as it gives them better public reputation, all of my friends have had Disc Read Errors with their PS1 and PS2 systems and Sony wouldn't cover them even though the systems would only be a couple of months past warranty, just like they won't cover the PS2 slim burning up cause of the lack of a fan.
You're pretty much SOL with Sony unless you want to pay good money to fix their faulty work, best thing to do is find a friend that knows how to repair consoles and just find the right part.
