As far as I know Bethesda kinda inhereted Brink as part of buying id, as Splash Damage had a strong relationship with id and were using id tech 4 for the game (they picked up Prey 2 which was in a similar position at the same time). After Brink bombed Splash damage moved into free 2 play games and licensed Unreal Engine. 


Yeah, the whole situation was kind of forced. Swithing specs and engines midway in a development cycle can prove expensive indeed nowadays, especially for a fairly niche title.
