I think most of the Dreamcast comparisons are made invalid by a failure to recognize why the DC failed. Sega was broke. They didn't have the cash. Sega had decided to pull the plug on the DC before the GC and Xbox launched.

Don't forget that Sega had alienated many of their most loyal fans with the Sega CD, Sega 32x, and Sega Saturn.

Oh I haven't. I pretty sure I typed a long and detailed post on why the Dreamcast failed on this site at some point. Just didn't feel like regurgitating it all. So I'll keep short.

-North American retailers held a grudge over the Saturn early launch. (Most major retailers didn't get the Saturn until it's original intended launch and quite a few refused to stock it.)

-Western 3rd party developers held a grudge over early North American launch of the Saturn. They were told they had until September to finish their launch titles. System launched in May.

-Japanese retailers and 3rd partieS held a grudge over the early end of the Saturn. The Saturn was very successful in Japan. It was killed because Sega handled the console so poorly in the West.

In short, Sega had managed to piss of it's fans, third parties,  and retailers worldwide. To top it off, they launched the Dreamcast when they were 2 billion in debt.
