They did expect the Wii sales to fall. The Wii was created to gather in casuals which generally assumes high sales/ short usability timing and quick diminishing interest. Thats where they succeeded which is exactly why the Kinect is helping Microsoft but after the third year will eventually fail them unless they hold buyer interest (which I doubt will last). What will people use the Kinect for next year? We'll have to find out soon.
Nintendo is going to have to change their marketing strategies for the Wii U because it's being marketed to the core with games that have already been spoken for and purchased to the brim months ago. The sales will not be stellar, but first party might surprise because we know their core will follow them wherever they go.
